Rust!!!
 

March 2016 Evo magazine has published a buying guide for the twins. It covers the usual but shock horror it talks about rusting quarter-light pillars on both front windows. I have not seen any threads talking about rust, is this real?

Yes it is real and no it is not near as bad as it sounds. There are a couple of threads on it. I will see if I can find them.
Like so many issues it seemed to be restricted to some of the very early 13s.

Keep the 86. A little bit of rust shouldnt scare you off. Especially when the first model was released maybe 3-4 years ago.

Nah you should be good. Can't find the other thread but if I recall it is one of those issues that you either get quickly or not at all.

The good thing about the rust in that spot, if it happens, you can actually swap out the part. If you had it elsewhere on a body, like rear fenders, you'd be in for a world of pain, grinding and re-painting.

So far after one winter of salt piles and a wet summer I have no rust other than bolts and fasteners that are not treated and you expect to rust. There is even a big rock chip on my front fender that I purposefully left untouched just to see that is still rust free. I am very optimistic at this point.

OP, I wouldn't worry about it .... if I recall proper, it was no more than a bit of "discoloration" at the base of the window strip.

Easily taken care of with a toothbrush and a bit of rubbing compound.

It does however seem to be very, very rare and restricted to a certain run of cars.

That's ugly. As stated above though, if it happens, the part can be easily swapped out. My car is an early production (April 2012) vehicle, and it is on it's 4th salty Southern Ontario winter...I don't have that problem.

My BRZ was assembled June 2012 which makes it an early model and has no such rust despite 3 years of daily driving on salted and sanded roads.

Edit: I will also note that it has never been rust proofed.
