Official: New Opel GT Concept Gets An Early Reveal Ahead Of Geneva Debut

Quote:

With a move that took most by surprise, Opel has pulled the wraps off the new GT Concept.

The study follows in the footsteps of the 1965 Opel Experimental GT, shown in Geneva that year, and it's a descendant of the Opel GT and Monza concept, described as "dynamic driving machine" that is "symbolized by the red signature line that splits the vehicle body horizontally and proportions it".

Being a concept, its looks are understandably much more outlandish the current design philosophy in Opel's lineup, and if it previews a future coupe we wouldn't be surprised if it gets watered down, though it would be a nice surprise if Russelsheim "did a Lexus" and made as little changes as possible.

The large doors with integrated side windows are a key innovation of the new GT Concept. Access to the cabin is provided by pressing a touchpad for the electric doors, integrated in the red signature line on the roof. Another distinctive feature is the dual-monitor setup on the left- and right-hand side of the cabin, which works together with two cameras mounted behind the wheel arches, enhancing visibility.

Instead of going after the "big boys", the study carries a 1.0-liter three-pot turbo engine, based on the one used in Adam, Corsa and Astra rated at 145PS (143hp) and 205Nm (151lb-ft) of torque.

Power is sent to the rear wheels and, having kept the weight at less than 1,000kg (2,205lbs,) the two-seater gets to 100 km/h (62 mph)from a standstill in less than 8 seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). Not that impressive on paper, still respectable compared to other compact coupes.

DAEMANO 01-27-2016 01:43 PM

There's both something terrific and horrific about this.

What the hell... 6.7526/10 would bang

Atropine 01-27-2016 04:34 PM

I have to agree with Daemano here.

Really, I think once they un-concept car it...it will be a really good looking car.

I have toyed with buying a really old Opel GT as a "classic car", but I am terrified of the cost of ownership.

So Opel wants a futuristic Miata-fighter?

I really like the exhaust. The wheels are interesting but look terribly heavy.

And what's with the "transparent aluminum" (Star Trek reference) door "windows"? How do they hand you your food at a drive through? How do you slide your license/registration out to the police? I don't wanna open my door, that might lead to an ass-whooping.

I know where there an Opel in the the friggen bushes wasting away. I want to buy it and start rebuilding it. My wife agrees but we have no room. I love Opels, another car my folks had along with the 240zs, they owned an Opel, a red one.

I don't however like this one much. There's no lines, just curves and to much is to much. We'll see when it hits the market I guess. The Alfa is comming back out also with intentions on dethroning the Miata.

Good luck with that

Over all shape reminds of a FD.

Reader envisions production-ready Opel GT, we love it

A reader has made our day a little bit better by sharing with us a render of a hypothetical Opel GT ready for production.

The company from Rüsselsheim took the virtual wraps off the GT concept earlier this week and already we have a render of how a production-intent model would look like. That’s highly unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future, but even so the styling exercise is worth sharing. Dare we say it actually looks better than the original concept and this rarely happens in real life when a concept morphs into a production car.

The author decided to install a set of OPC wheels and mounted conventional side mirrors along with flush door handles to main the concept’s sleekness. Those weird red front tires are gone and the red signature line has also been erased while the roof has a more conventional shape. The headlights are now more down-to-earth and feature Opel’s familiar boomerang of LED daytime running lights.

We wouldn’t mind seeing this on the road, even with the concept’s tiny turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine delivering 145 horsepower. Despite the puny motor, Opel says the GT concept sprints to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than eight seconds and tops out at 133 mph (215 kph).

We will check out the rear-wheel drive Opel GT concept in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show early March.

Great looking car!

For those who don't remember the original Opel GT of the late 60s and early 70s...what a good looking little car.

Those tires doe

zigzagz94 01-28-2016 07:41 PM

The worldcarfans render is nice but if people think the twins and ND miata are under powered, even at 1,000kg, a 145hp turbo 3cyl isn't going to win over many fans. Potential wasted.

5/10

FLYFISHR 01-28-2016 08:19 PM

With today's quality of paints the area in front of the rear wheels would be a mess in short order

Sideways 01-28-2016 08:31 PM

I like the look of itl!! But no way the production version will look like this, if it ever make it thr!!

But those wheel are something else!!
