First time changing oil

Hey guys it's my first time changing oil in the frs. I looked at the gasket the one that came off from the factory(painted black) and it looks thinner than the one I bought. I'm I suppose to use the crash washer that came with the filter?or leave the painted black(thinner) from the factory?
Thanks

Yes. Only use one crush washer.

Its a crush washer. Your old one is crushed. The new one is just not crushed yet until you tighten it. Everything you have looks as it should.

The old one is only black because they painted the oil pan with the drain plug and washer installed. My washer was glued to the nut with paint when I did my first change.

Same with the oil filter ..... take off the old rubber gasket, use the new one ..... NEVER two together.

DO NOT over tighten the oil pan drain plug, snug it down to the crush washer, snug a bit more to crush the washer then about 1/4 to 1/2 turn more.

Or use a torque wrench.

Remember to only "hand tighten" the oil filter ..... unless your hands are greasy and/or you have a weak grip..........then you may give it a final nudge with a filter wrench.

Yes it does. It shouldn't come out unless you take it out

the gasket on the filter itself? I didn't know that comes off unless you specifically try and remove it lol

Well, the gasket is usually glued to the filter and doesn't come off.

HOWEVER, if someone had put the filter on and didn't put a thin film of oil on the rubber gasket and over tightened the filter and broke the seal, the old gasket could stick to the oil filter housing.

So, if you don't notice it and slap the new filter on with a new gasket, you now have a double gasket ....... which when tightened, may scooch out and the oil filter will leak.

Not so much of a problem with our oil filters because they are on top and can be seen.

Not like ........the old days ......;) when we had to lay on our backs, under the car, on a cold, wet, gravel driveway, in the dark, on a snowy winter night and change the oil filter........:respekt:

on my MR2, the oil filter was under the car at a 45 degree angle. it was a pain changing oil since as soon as the filter gets loose, oil starts dripping onto my hands and I have to turn it like 5 full turns until I can take it off. oil changes were so messy, by the time I take off the filter my arm has oil leaking down and oil everywhere under my car from being flung around as I try to speed turn the filter. oil changes on the BRZ are a breeze, especially with my quick valve. it's so nice lol

This is exactly what happened at my first oil change (at the dealer). After waiting a couple hours for my oil change to be finished, I went to see what the problem was. My car was on the lift and they were taking it apart. I asked the service manager what was going on and he said they double gasketed the oil filter and oil SPRAYED all over the engine compartment. It didn't leak, it sprayed. Took them a couple more hours to clean everything but they did a good job of cleaning. That was the last time I took my car to the dealer for anything.
