First Driving Experience in the SNOW!!
 

Sup guys, just had my first drive in the snow! From the NOVA area and its "crazy" out there right now. I literally just got my blizzaks put on yesterday so thank the car gods for that.

I was able to stay in full control for the most part, was actually surprised at how many times my wheels spun and how many times traction control went crazy based on what everyone has said about winter tires. At least I didn't lose control/get stuck like a lot of cars/trucks I saw.... however some lady rolled into me while I was at a stop (luckily no damage).

Just wanted to share my experience with you guys about my first time driving the twin and a RWD manual car in the snow :D

You're taking "some lady rolled into me while I was at a stop" a LOT better than I would have. Haha

Yeah, even snow tires will still slip a bit but they just offer you a little more control and grip overall. It won't ever be like driving in the dry or even wet. But God have mercy on those who attempt to drive a lightweight RWD car in the snow with summer tires.

Well there was no visible damage and it was pretty light, I was pretty pissed when it happened though.

Is traction control needed? TBH it was kind of annoying when I was trying to brake or make a turn and it was going crazy. Will the snow tires offer me enough control without it?

I would suggest NOT driving the BRZ or FRS in the snow lol ESPECIALLY if you don't have winter tires at all :sigh:

Is TC needed..?? No, it's not needed; we drove many ah mile on snow/ice covered roads, with rear wheel drive cars, without TC or ESC or even a limited slip differential........and it was uphill both ways...... :D

However, most of the time, for most people, on most snow packed /ice covered roads, leaving the TC ON will get you further, faster.

Sometimes it just doesn't seem that way ....... because you don't have one wheel spinning it's head off ....... :)

In most cars, I usually prefer it off in the snow. But you do have to pay more attention and have more finesse. Just try testing it out without TC for a bit. I would recommend keeping at least VSC Sport on though.

Do you even winter? This car is amazing in the snow.

In regards to TC in the winter time, if I'm just booting around town, no TC. If I'm driving on the highway, then yes TC.

Keep the gas tank near full at all times whilst attempting driving in snow/ice conditions.

Two obvious reasons: More weight near the drive wheels, a full tank in case you get stuck in a blizzard...to be able to keep warm.

Drive only when you must, where you live, as others don't have a lot of experience driving in those conditions. Your worst nightmare is others who can't stop, may hit you from the rear, or at intersections.


Update 1-21-16 9:22pm PST. Well let's see...Tonights news told me it took some people 8hrs to get home after work yesterday, and even The President's motorcade had a little trouble in traffic as well. Call in sick if you can on a bad day, or stay overnight at your work place if you must...whatever it takes to keep yourself safe.

Haha, no wonder the US goes into a state of emergency when anywhere south of Detroit gets any snow accumulation.

Blizzaks and you're spinning tires? Put more weight on the tires

They are the Blizzaks lm-32 which I believe are performance snow tires and not full out winter tires. Who knows though.

I am in NoVa too, and I was just complaining in the MidAtlantic subforum how little fun I had driving a FWD car (though no nannies at all, even no ABS) this evening. What a waste of snow, I need a twin!
