Back in the day cutting springs was the norm. It never hurt a thing. You just have to be careful to only cut what you want with a grinder. Do not hit any other part of the spring. If you cut bushing on the strut shaft you will not bounce or bottom out. I cut 4 1/2 coils off Suspension Technique lowering spings for my '91 civic and had no problems. Drove like that for years. I also accompanied the cut springs with Tokico blues. The ride was very stiff but I never bottomed out the struts once.

After tearing an airbag, as a temporary replacement I cut an oem spring and re-installed it. About two inches lower with no bottoming out, no scrub, no spring failure. Ride and handling both fine...
