Pressing brakes hard in snow (Terrible Noise)

Does every 86 make a terrible noise when your ABS engages while on a surface like snow/ice?

swarb 01-20-2016 04:26 PM

I like the noise.

Me three!

I don't like snow.
Probably the frozen slush piled up in the rotor

Yes. Its normal. Slow down, you're driving too fast for the conditions. ;)

Being that you are apparently from Georgia, I will give you the benefit of the doubt. But you are incorrect.

I can live with that. I don't drive in the snow. I work from home. And I've been incorrect before so its all good. We do get snow and ice sometimes a lot some times a little. Then next day its 70! Last week it was in the 70s now it's raining ice

Well, yes, mine does that a lot of the times (if I'm going too fast for the conditions, like @HunterGreene said).

If the sound is like a rapid, rubber hammering sound, coming from all the wheels, it's just the ABS doing its thing.

Beats the heck of the sound from the old days ...... a scheeeee from one wheel (after it locked up) and the other three just free wheeling along ...... until you hit something ..... :(

Been there, done that, don't wanna do it again! Getting my old GTO slowed down at the end of the 1/4 mile was always interesting. 4-wheel drum brakes with no power assist, both feet on the brake pedal, and pulling on the steering wheel...never knew which wheel would lock up first.

To the OP...you'll get the same noise (or worse) if you get a little bit sideways, and the stability control cuts in to stop the fun.

I'd assume it's not the brakes themselves, but the hardened tires attempting to gain traction as a result of the cold.
