Car jerks when shift from neutral to 1st
 

Hi all, I bought my FRS used with 25k miles on odometer. I've been experiencing this problem lately. Whenever I shift from neutral to first, the car jerks. Sometimes it jerks hard, sometimes it's mild, sometimes it doesn't jerk at all. I thought that was because of the transmission fluid. So i swapped out the old fluid today and put in fresh motul gear 75W90. I noticed it shifts a lot nicer but the jerk's still there. I doesn't happen to any gear, just when shifting from neutral to 1st. Is that normal to our car? Is it a serious problem and need to take care immediately? I still have factory warranty. Please help!

Does this happen with the engine off too? I'm just taking a guess, but maybe the clutch isnt fully disengaging when you depress the pedal completely.

Definitely not normal though.

EDIT: Just noticed you said you still have factory warranty. Definitely take it in.

With the car in neutral, push the clutch in for 3 seconds, then put it in first. It shouldn't jerk, because the input shaft has slowed down. If it still jerks, you may have an issue.

No problem. If you clutch in, and immediately shift from neutral to first, the input shaft hasn't slowed, so the speeds are mismatched and creates a jerk/clunk. If you can replicate that every time, and it doesn't happen when you hold the clutch for a bit then switch to first gear, you're all good.

Now that's assuming we're talking about the same jerk/clunk.

So if it does not happen again when i press the clutch for a little longer that means it's nothing to worry about or do i still need to take it to dealership?

if you hold the clutch in longer and that fixes the issue, then your car is fine.

anyway, there's no reason to shift into first at speed. first is just there to get the car moving... if you're rolling, at all, put it in second

So I need to go to dealership asap? It is under warranty?

It is a wear item but if it is under 25k you can get it repaired (with luck). DO you have any odd sounds or stuttering when slowly pressing clutch while stopped? I mean real slow.

the problem the OP has is probably not related to the TOB. every 86 has the clunk when shifting into 1st after coming to a stop. I'm assuming the levels of jerkiness that the OP is describing is due to the pressure he has on his brake pedal since I notice that shifting into 1st with no brakes applied will bump the car a little. just try holding in the clutch for a bit longer before putting it into gear and see if that works as previously mentioned. if not, then take it into the dealership

I haven't seen any odd sound from the clutch,but I'll try to press it real close to see if there is any odd sound from it. Thank you.
