Ryan's 86 car journal

Purchased as my daily. Slowly been tinkering with it while trying not to make it miserable to drive around town.

Purchased a brand new 2017 Toyota 86 in March 2018. I had the dealer install PPF on the front end, third party installer polished the entire car in the process.

On the left my SX4 which I was happy to trade in. Got rid of it before It needed 1-2k maintenance.

Had the dealer do some PDR work as the car has small dings from sitting on the lot.

My first 10,000km went quick. I did my first oil change and booked my first track session at calabogie raceway in August 2018.

Bone stock the car handled track abuse better than I expected. The factory pads didn't like the 30 minute session but I learned a lot and realized I wanted to do this more.

A few months passed and I needed to start prepping the car for winter. I found a set of 16" speedline wheels and mounted Pirelli winter tires. I got stuck on a slushy drive home and realized how terrible and terrifying the stock primacy tires are in less favorable conditions.

Made it about 8 months before I needed to make a change. Added a Corsa catback.

Spring 2019 I picked up a set of 17x8 Atech finalmind GR wheels from a JDM importer. Mounted with Michelin pilot sport 4S tires.

September 2019 I gave the car a cosmetic one over and ceramic coated it while on vacation.

Admittedly I am a detail freak, and I'm sure my neighbors think I am crazy.

https://i.imgur.com/KgfqhWX.jpg

I did a full decontaminaton wash, which consists of clay'ing the paint, and using chemical iron removers. Iron-X smells absolutely terrible if anybody has used it, it's rancid.
Final prep with a polisher and about 6 hours work start to finish the coating was done. I am pleased with the results.

October 2019 was our annual local 86 meet.
We donate to the local food bank as a gesture and pick a route, meet for lunch and then find some twisty roads in the area to enjoy.

Our rendezvous spot to get everyone together. I was part of a separate group who came from a different part of town. Three people got pulled over within two minutes of leaving for allegedly speeding. A good start to the day!

Hard to tell here but we totalled 21 cars.

https://i.imgur.com/e44HpK0.jpg

We drove just over an hour to a lunch spot picked out for us. Somebody knew the owners who graciously hosted us without cost. Most of us donated regardless for the gesture.

https://i.imgur.com/zClh9Zw.jpg

Loved the sign. We handed out some door prizes and got ready to set off on our route.

https://i.imgur.com/85V2Fdq.jpg

There was a last minute change to the route we were set to drive on. We made our way to a cider craft brewery which had decent roads along the way.

https://i.imgur.com/WBkPzHv.jpg

BUSL was the name of the brewery.
https://i.imgur.com/S1UX6JF.jpg

We made a small pit stop on route to a photo spot. To nobody's surprise it is difficult to keep 20 cars together when directions get fuzzy.

We made it to the photo spot, a members family owned the quarry and thought it would be a suitable place!

February 2020
Took the car to a snow/ice lapping session at calabogie which they set up within the paddock. $100 all in all day. 11-4.

Wasn't a big track, but enough to have some sideways fun.
https://i.imgur.com/r183auS.jpg

They actually ran the Gallardo which was awesome to see

One of the driving instructors was taking photos and said some kind words to me after I pulled off. They also provide a winter driving clinic for newbies to the white stuff.

He took some pretty good action shots!
I spoke with the owner of the Subaru in the frame below after we pulled off, and he bought the car strictly for ice racing. $700 and it lasted him 4 seasons. I couldn't believe how cheap it was to run. Way more affordable than summer track driving

That snow session looks like so much fun! Great way to learn the dynamics of the car at slower speeds/lower risk.

May 2020 Covid is in full swing and nobody knows what's going on. We had just gotten back from vacation a week prior to airports shutting down in March. So what to do while bored at home? Order parts!

Ordered a set of RCE yellows, a front lip and POR-15 caliper paint kit, and lastly repaired and refinished my wheels.

https://i.imgur.com/xKYZFfb.jpg

There was curb damage and a chip on one of the spokes when I bought them and it always bugged me. I spent a couple of weekends going through the process not to rush anything.

A shot with the springs, painted wheels, and calipers done.
Top picture is stock height and original color wheels. Very similar color, my main goal was to repair the damage.

The lip arrived with a big scuff mark. My OCD kicked in and decided to spray it with duplicolor universal black and automotive clear.

RToyo86 04-20-2021 01:05 PM

I found some suede overlays for interior parts that were just released on AliExpress. Nobody had reviewed them yet so I decided to be the guinea pig and try them out.

I ordered everything in black. shifter, door handle, center AC vent and the trim piece near the infotainment by the knee pads. I was hoping it would match closely to the factory black suede that the car already uses on the dash and upper door trim. They now make a overlay for the putter AC trim ring. They didn't when I had ordered in June 2020.

They stick on with pre-installed adhesive. I found it worked best to heat up the parts with a blow dryer which made them mold easily into place. The door handles don't sit as flush as I'd like but everything else went on smoothly.

I also grabbed some carbon accent pieces. Hand brake lever, door window switch, plaque to fill the heated seat controls, and clock radio bezel.

August 2020
Brought my car back to calabogie for two 30 minute lapping sessions. The Track requires you to be signed off to run solo. They run a program to sign you off that's around $650 for the day and they teach you how HPDE works and will only sign you off if they feel confident. Meaning you could require another day if you aren't up to snuff.
Alternatively Twice a year they run a novice even which is $75 for 30 minutes and a instructor. Nice way to have cheap fun and crazy good deal to have an instructor shotgun.
The event runs from 9am-1:30pm and you can sign up as much as you'd like if there is space in the time slot. I managed to grab 2 slots as they tend to fill up quick.

They split the track in half and run the novice sessions on the west track and run a test and tune on the east track for race events which happen for the rest of the weekend.

My first run group looked mostly like this. Couple more showed up in the rear later. E36 BMW and a Audi.

It's basically a run what you bring event, no vans of trucks. I didn't run with this legend but you see all sorts of stuff on these days
https://i.imgur.com/2nTcP4J.jpg

Also got some video footage I thought I'd share.
A friend taking trackside of my first session
https://youtu.be/VOY5dmsg62Y

Dashcam of my second session with audio. I asked the instructor for line information, so that's what he did. He was really good, he had a track prepped 400hp Lotus Elise that was at the event.
I was warming up chasing a BRZ tS. We spoke afterwards and the car is bone stock. I realized I need some form of oil cooler after this. The Forester oil cooler is on my short list as a DD all year setup. A friend running there mentioned is kept his oil temps at 260f compared to 280f+ running the full circuit.

https://youtu.be/QKo362ZgoZA
https://youtu.be/E3QUdmryg6w

Had a blast and the instructor had kind words for me. He also offered a loop hole to bring him or another instructor along to a lapping night and allow me to get signed off that way. Considerably cheaper, Not really the official way of doing things but I will take it.

Winter 2020

How the car sat for winter use. My speed line wheels need to be repainted but I haven't got around to it. They have plastidip on them now which holds up to salt and crap nicely.

I got a set of Gruppe-s headers cheap off a friend. Pulled Corsa exhaust off and ordered an OFT. Grabbed a gruppe-s Overpipe and Perrin inlet hose from FT86MS and did everything at the same time. Ran canned stg2+ tune for a bit.
https://i.imgur.com/JyTDstz.jpg

About a month later installed SPC LCA and added crash bolt up top up front to add more camber. Car alignmented with -2.3°f/-1.9°R, 0 toe F/R.
https://i.imgur.com/dQK39uM.jpg

After speaking with tommaso we went through the process of doing a custom tune. Thanks again @tomm.brz
Tune runs strong, logs looked great AFR all spot on.

Anybody curious how gruppe-s headers/OP sound with the stock FP and catback.

Almost caught up. This was two weeks ago.

My set of Bilstein B6s showed up at FT86MS. Being local and impatient I was able to drive over and pick them up that day and start installing them that weekend.

Pulled apart the suspension and the yellows on stock struts. The rear shocks in particular felt pretty toast at 75,000km. Yellows went on at 50,000km and had an hour of track use, plus the winter.
To show the inverted front strut.

Spent the past weekend doing a spring clean. Cleaned the engine bay, changed the engine oil, removed the undertray to do a exhaust bolt check.
Lastly added some DEI gold reflective tape to the oil pan. If I'm honest under normal driving I have noticed zero difference in oil temperatures.

Left some winter oil spray on. Didn't feel like going nuts but cleaned up decently.

Finally got around to painting the silver steering wheel trim on Sunday. It was pretty simple to get the wheel apart.

https://i.imgur.com/928E0D3.jpg

The end result blends into the rest of my interior perfectly. I also painted the outer AC trim overlays I purchased from AliExpress with the same automotive black vinyl paint.
Theres very little silver left on the interior but I'll probably keep what's there as accent pieces.

I picked up a set of Yokohama advan V105s in 225/45R17 to get mounted this week along with an alignment from B6 install. Curious to see how they are. I'm planning to do some autocross this summer and wanted a burner set that I didn't care about to learn on.

Ordered TRD door stabilizers from Japan parts. Considerably cheaper than anywhere else.

RToyo86 04-22-2021 09:29 PM

Got the new rubber mounted, then an alignment done.

Perfect day to mount 240tw tires. :eyebulge:
https://i.imgur.com/kLyCwVz.jpg

Old PS4S heading to the bin. I didn't realize how terrible they rode the week I ran them. They were on the wear bars but they felt like hockey pucks over bumps.
https://i.imgur.com/076wndg.jpg

Meatier Sidewall than I'm used too :D
https://i.imgur.com/0e7CSvJ.jpg

The car got a detail afterwards. The city salted the roads even though there was no accumulation and were dry by 10am. My car was covered with salt by the time I got home. My fiance thinks I'm nuts for washing my car when it was only 4c outside at the time.(to my credit it was warming up)

https://i.imgur.com/vfZfpuU.jpg

Then went and had alignment done by an autocross guy who knows his stuff. Gave me his thoughts and went at it. Front camber gave him some trouble. He mentioned he had to loosen the crash bolt and camber bolt a lot then push back and forth on the wheel to get the crash bolt to slide back.

https://i.imgur.com/R6O9u6m.jpg

Need some time to feel out how the car handles but intial impressions are good. Car rides better than the primacy and way better than the hockey puck PS4S. Sidewall is noticeably stiffer. Turn in feel is great.

Edit:
Ordered white lineline KDT926 transmission bushing insert. Going to start with this then do the steering lockdown.
