Put on P then did handbrake
 

Damn on me. Last one year, I have parked my car by putting gear on Park first, then pull the handbrake. Thats why everytime I changed my gear from parking to reverse/drive, there was small shake and loud noise comes.
Today, just now I learned that I am doing wrong since I bought the car brand new.
It is automatic and am I need to be worried about my transmission?

Sounds like you shift to park, then take your foot off he brake, and then apply the parking brake. You should apply the parking brake before taking your foot off the brake

Exactly I am doing like this for over a year. Can I expecting a damage to my transmission because of my stupidity?

yes, time to fix by replacing with manual transmission

No, that's exactly how your supposed to do it.

So it is very interesting. I just did following as for curiosity-

Stopped properly
While pressed brake pedal, i moved gear to N
Pull the hand brake and release the brake pedal. Now car move a inch
Press break pedal and change to gear to P
Turn off the car

After doing so, i start my car and shifting gear from P to R/D, there are no that heavy noise coming.

Which one i follow, manual book or the above the procedure?

When did parking become so complicated?

Do it your way. Your technique assures that the weight of car never rests on the park pawl in the transmission. Don't worry about how you've done it until now. Properly designed, the safety mechanism will last the life of the car but you are correct in observing the wear from pulling it free. It's exactly how I do it.


It's like pulling out the key, turning the steering wheel until it locks and then turning on the ignition while the wheel rests against the lock.
