FT-86 / FR-S size dimensions compared to Genesis, Civic, Sction tC, etc

One thing i hate about most new cars is their size and how huge they all are, even sports cars. Look at the GTR that thing is is HUGE. Got me thinking to compare the size of the FT86 against its competing cars. Here's some stats

FT86:

Length: 163.78 inches / Width: 69.29 inches / Height: 48.19 inches / Wheelbase: 101.18 inches

AE86:
Length: 168.7 inches / Width: 64 inches / Height: 52.6 inches / Wheelbase: 94.5 inches / Weight: 2094

Genesis coupe:

Length: 182.3 inches / Width: 73.4 inches / Height: 54.5 / Wheelbase: 111 inches

370Z:

Length: 167.2 inches / Width: 72.8 inches / Height: 51.8 inches / Wheelbase: 100.4 inches / Weight: 3,359

Civic coupe:

Length: 175.5 inches / Width: 68.9 inches / Height: 55 inches / Wheelbase: 104.3 inches

Scion tC coupe:
Length: 174 inches / Width: 69.1 inches / Height: 55.7 inches / Wheelbase: 106.3 inches / Weight: 2905lbs (manual) - 2970 (auto)

S2000:

Length: 162.7 inches / Width: 68.9 inches / Height: 50 inches / Wheelbase: 94.5 inches
Weight: 2809lbs

CaymanS:

Length: 172.1 inches / Width: 70.9 inches / Height: 51.4 inches / Wheelbase: 95.1 inches
Weight: 2965lbs

So basically the FT-86 is smaller in all dimensions than almost all its competitors which is promising for me as a sports car lover. I especially love the height dimension... not only is center of gravity going to be low but it just looks so much better.

Hoping that it doesn't grow in production form and toyota stays true to making it a smaller tossable 21st century AE86

Hah when I read this I immediately thought of this photo. Man I miss the 80-90's japanese sports cars!

I just hope Toyota stick to their word and keep it light weight when it arrives. Cause I don't expect big power being the selling point for this car.

The GTR is rediculous, its basicly a japanese Camaro or Mustang. This car will bring back what a SPORTS car is supposed to be.

I think the Honda S2000 & Porsche Cayman S should be thrown in for good measure:

FT86:
Length: 163.78 inches / Width: 69.29 inches / Height: 48.19 inches / Wheelbase: 101.18 inches
Weight: ???

AP1:
Length: 162.7 inches / Width: 68.9 inches / Height: 50 inches / Wheelbase: 94.5 inches
Weight: 2809lbs

987c:
Length: 172.1 inches / Width: 70.9 inches / Height: 51.4 inches / Wheelbase: 95.1 inches
Weight: 2965lbs

So I'm obsessed with the size of the car and searched around and found these comparison images.

Love how it's small almost like the size of the s2000. I always wished there was an S2000 coupe version.

A further point of note:

The 370Z puts down (whp) ~280 in 6MT and ~265 in 7AT trim and weighs in around 3300 lbs. That means 1 whp for every 11.79 / 12.45 lb or so of car.

If the FT-86 weighs in around 2600 lbs (quite likely based on all their earlier claims) it will need to make ~220.5 / ~209 whp to have the same performance capability.

That will probably require a blower or turbo (I'd be surprised if the FT-86 even makes that much power to the crank), but if Toyota keeps the price a good 10 grand less than the 370Z and either offers a factory option or a stout enough motor, it should be easy to turn the new car into a very quick little monster, and still cost less than a Z.

Not to mention better fuel efficiency.

Argh... Toyota needs to release more info already...

I really don't think you're going to find the FT-86 to be turbo in stock form, although we can all hope!

If it does not come FI'd from the factory, I'm sure we can count on the aftermarket to supply that rather quickly.

With variable valve timing and direct injection along with reworked internals by Toyota, the engine should be able crank out at least 200 hp. In Japan, the EJ20 DOHC with AVCS was able to push out 190 hp so I can't see why the boxer in the FT can't do the same.

The only real problem might be cost but with all this sharing going on I hope that Toyota has been able to save some money which in turn could help us.

That's a good point of comparison but in my opinion its not all about the power/weight ratio. Yea that's good for acceleration, but a better power/weight ratio doesn't necessarily mean better handling or dynamics. A significantly lighter car even with worse power/weight may still handle much better and just feel better to the driver.

Of course I'd love to see a powerful motor in this thing but I wouldn't be disappointed with a great handling car that may not go as fast in the 1/4 mile.

I'm not too worried about power to weight because it will only be a matter of time before aftermarket gets a hold of it and motor swaps become available (2JZ-GTE) :)

Do you have a link with a dyno/more info for that? I've been trying to gather as much info as possible on what the EJ20 is capable of and what its limits appear to be.

I only mention that because the 370Z seems to be prettly well liked for it's handling, despite being a bit on the heavy side -- all the reviews put the 370 head and shoulders abouve the 350.

When it was first introduced the engine was capable of 190 bhp.
