Didn't see this posted. Sorry if it's a repost.

The Advertising Standards Agency has pulled an advert for the Toyota GT 86 coupe after only two complaints

An advert for the Toyota GT 86 coupe has been banned by the advertising watchdog, after viewers complained that it was “irresponsible” and “condoned dangerous driving”.

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) received two complaints against the computer game-style advert, which shows a man get into a GT 86 and drive at speed through the streets of a computer-animated world. The man is followed by a police helicopter, before bursting through a glass barrier in to the real world.

Toyota has defended the ad claiming that it “was clearly set in an animated, artificial and fantasy environment,” and that it “did not condone or encourage unsafe or irresponsible driving.”

However, the ASA upheld the complaint, saying that the “highly stylised nature” of the commercial “glamourised the wreckless manner in which the car was driven.”

The ban applies to the longer 90 second version of the advert that has been shown on YouTube and in cinemas.

I still like the "Your Wife's Reaction to your new GT86" one better but I like this one too

that is the most absurd claim ever.

Apparently the Advertising Standards Agency doesn't watch video game commercials, which "condone" murder, property destruction, and all manner of mayhem.

This is a car manufacturer showing their product which is a deadly 2750 lb, 120 mph weapon, being driven wrecklessly. The car is in some part marketed to drift, and the reprocussions will be felt increasingly if they push that concept too far for the mainstream consumer market.

Yes the commercial portrays a video game based fantasy story, but you can really drive that way in the real world. And it shouldnt be advertised by Toyota in order to protect themselves in many ways. The frustrating part is that this commercial creatively and near perfectly shows exactly what this car does that sets it apart in the market.

You can drive a POS Kia Sportage all over a #%$&'in swamp with no issues but don't drift a sportscar because many people will mimic that behaviour with possibly bad outcomes.

Between insurance rates, liability, marketing...they gotta make the drifting thing a "nudge nudge wink wink" kinda thing if to some extent. The less they actually have to go out and show you this car drifting the better so long as it keeps selling. I am of course speaking for Toyota. And this is my humble opinion.

I'd be really surprised if that commercial was shown here in North America, although it would be cool in the movie theatre like the Matrix ones they did.

“irresponsible” and “condoned dangerous driving”? Please, I've seen worse commercial than this.

Need for Speed. It shows real cars racing in public road & make it awesome... I mean worse, Ford Focus ST flip bacon off.

If they say "That commercial is okay because it's a game" lame excuses, it goes same with Toyota 86 commercial. It's a damn CG! Those tv watcher need to chill out and go outside, instead of complain about everything

They ban this commercial but they don't have a problem with 'Top Gear' which shows far more dangerous stuff.

Demandred7 11-16-2012 07:12 PM

Not that it is a fantastic commercial or anything. They are banning that?

I guess they would have been better off with a little more Matrix flavour into it so that it amps up the complete lack of reality that this commercial already has.

As if I would smash my FR-S through gates and stuff. I guess it would have been better for him to leave the city first and start hooning it around deserted salt flats or abandoned roads.

Maybe they should have put a giant disclaimer at the bottom:

Simulated Professional driver on a Computer Generated closed course.

Speaking of inappropriate stuff being aired, one of the related links from that video is HILARIOUS :D
