Yes, I believe my FR-S was “profiled” by a Washington State Patrolman.

Here is my story, what do you think .. ??

While on our way, for a short three day get-a-way over to the coast of Oregon, we were cruising down Highway 101, in southern Washington. It was a bright, sunny day, very little traffic, on a dry, straight stretch of road, out in the country (see map).

I noticed a large, white vehicle coming from the other direction when, all of a sudden, the vehicle's grill lit up like a slot machine in Vegas that had just hit the jackpot. At the same time my radar detector started squawking and mrs humfrz started squawking.

As I looked in the rear view mirror, I saw that the patrol vehicle was quickly turning around and coming my way …. real fast. I was hoping he was after a bad boy on up the road. Nope the bad boy he was after was ME. My first thought was to open up the boost on my turbocharger and hit the NOS button to see if I could beat him to the Oregon state line. Then I realized, that I did not have a turbocharger nor NOS, so I pulled over.

I was sitting there with my window down, my hands high on the steering wheel, in my brown, checkered, flannel shirt, looking old and harmless. His first words were “I’m informing you that you are being video and audio recorded”. I looked around for the TV crew, thinking I was going to be on an episode of “Bad Boys”, but didn’t see anybody.

His next statements were “you were going just a little bit too fast back there in your HOT ROD car”. I clocked you going 68 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.”

Right then, after his “hot rod” comment, I figured a “warning” was out of the picture. After I handed over the requested paperwork, he returned with a ticket for $125.

Now, my contention is that, if I were driving something like a Buick, I wouldn’t have gotten pulled over nor would I have been given a ticket.

What do ya’ll think …. ?? Was my FR-S “profiled” …. ??

Have you had an incidence where you felt your FR-S/BRZ was profiled by law enforcement … ??

I was pulled over in the absolute middle of no where in Ontario in a hot lava frs doing 105km in a 80,
I thought the same thing and asked myself if had have been driving a camry would I have been pulled over, Probably not but that didn't help in court and I still paid the ticket not much you can do now no sence loosing sleep

But... you were speeding though. :P

I honestly feel somewhat bad for never exceeding the speed limit by over 5 kilometres for more than 10 continuous seconds. :|

But were you "going 68 MPH in a 55 MPH zone"?

Just kidding, don't answer that. But if the answer is "yes", then there's no point arguing that he "profiled" you because of your car. It's irrelevant what car you were in, since you still were breaking the law.

That's akin to saying "It's not fair! Everybody else was doing it too but I'm the one that got in trouble! Therefore, I shouldn't be punished", and we all know that's not a concrete argument.

A better argument would be that you weren't speeding, and that he mistakenly clocked the speed of another car in front of you. Unless he can undoubtedly prove that it was you that he clocked with his radar, then you might have a chance. I've made that argument in court before and got the case dismissed.

Oh, yes, I was most likely going 68 MPH .....:(

I've already paid the speeding ticket ....... :sigh:

But... But.... what good did the radar detector do? radar detector that detects radars after being clocked, sweet.

Not much, really. That's why I don't bother with one.

The only time a radar detector might help is if you're in a group of cars (not at the front) and your detector detects radar waves as the cop is clocking a car in front of you. Then, hypothetically, you have a sliver of time to check your speed before he clocks you too.

I was pulled over in rush hour traffic for "doing aggressive lane changes". The cop saw the numbers and "1morelap" sticker on my car and asked "if I take my driving seriously", to which I said "yes". He then let me off with a warning after he saw my nearly spotless driving record.

When he pulled me over, he said "we are focusing on driver safety this week", to which I said: "what about every other week?". I don't think he heard me.

I was pulled over in my BRZ by a piece of shit Texas state trooper for doing 71 in a 75 mph zone. I was second in line in a group of cars, and the cop singled me out and gave me a bogus ticket. He admitted he didn't hit me with his laser. He claimed he clocked the whole group going 85, and since I was in the group, I was guilty. I know for a fact the group wasn't going 85 because we were all hemmed in by a truck in the right lane going 71 and an idiot in a minivan who had matched the guy's speed in the left lane and wouldn't let anyone pass. The cop was a lying sack of shit who deserves to have his badge shoved up his ass.

I sometimes have to go down to McAllen on the Mexican border for work, where the hillbilly Texas government has decided to send hundreds of troopers for the express purpose of harassing brown people. I rent a car when I go. I have a real fear that if I drove the BRZ, one of them would pull me over and accuse me of being an illegal Mexican drug dealer and impound my car.

That stinks. Yes, unfortunately that's quite common behavior from the cops with a car like the FRS/BRZ. I have a similar story. I was driving with the flow of traffic in Weat Orange, NJ when all of a sudden a silver Honda pilot started tailgating me. I was on the left lane of a 2 lane road going downhill and most definitely at least 5 over the speed limit (55mph). I felt uncomfortable so I switched into the right lane and speed up a little bit (~65mph probably). The silver Honda pilot also changed lanes and continued to aggressively follow me barely ~5 feet away from my rear bumper. Up ahead i coasted through a curve in the road. The SUV stayed behind me and after we hit traffic, I heard sirens and saw the red and blue lights from behind me. I was extremely confused because there was no marked police unit behind me. The Honda pilot was the undercover cop. It was a 3-4 year old silver Honda pilot with tinted windows all around (including windshield). After I pulled over into a side street, he was really agitated. When he approached my driver side window, I opened up with something like “hey officer, how's it going "- he cut me off and his first words were “we've been getting calls about... Why are you in such a hurry, .... Where are you going that you speeding soo fast". I was really scared and honestly just started apologizing for going faster than the speed limit. Then he accused me of “evading from the police". He thought I spotted him when I was going UP the him and made a u-turn trying to get away from him or something. This wasn't true because honestly I had no clue where he was. Apparently he saw my FRS going up the hill and made a u-turn and continued to follow me until I returned downhill. After he took my papers, he called in my plates to dispatch and I heard him describing the FRS as “... I have a red TOYOTA coupe pulled over here for speeding..." . I have scion badges on the FRS. I'm pretty sure that he either confused my car for another speeding red Toyota or he profiled a red sports car.
I was luckier than you though because he left me off the hook with a verbal warning. He returned to my window after checking the system and said “i don't why I'm doing this but I'm not gonna write you a ticket... Slow it down ". Then he gave me specific instructions to NOT make a k turn in a driveway and instead make a u-turn at the end of the road. When I did that I noticed him following me for another 5 minutes. But i noticed him 2 cars behind me and this time I set the cruise for 55mph exactly.

That's the craziest encounter I've had with a police stop because of the undercover element and due to the agitated officer. Honestly I think he felt bad for when he noticed I was terrified. Probably got a good laugh out of it.

I'd look into just getting a court date and paying heftier fine (~$390) and pleading guilty to a no point ticket like ”unsafe driving". That's what I've done in the past (new jersey)

I was under the impression that only laser types were detected when within range(visual or device effective range) but that for wave types they are able to detect before getting in the effective range of the unit.. :sigh:

Interesting story.

After paying the ticket (which turns into a "referral fee"), I have applied to the State of Washington for a deferral on this ticket. Deferrals are usually granted to drivers with clean records (I haven't had a ticket for over 15 years). The deferral is subject to the driver being a good boy for a period of time.

It is my understanding that the upside of a deferral is that the ticket is not reported to DMV nor to the insurance companies..... a bright spot......:)
