Setting Timing LH Bank
I am trying to set the timing on the left hand side (driver) and the tick mark on the intake cam is not in any range to line up with the pink plate of the chain. The cams are at zero lift. I tried two different sprockets and same issue both times. I thought maybe the internals of the sprocket where damaged and it was stuck in full advance or full retard position. Only other thing it could be is the camshaft is twisted but the tick mark is at least 35-45 degrees away from where it should be. Any thoughts on what to do? :iono:

Have you had the cams off of the head or have you just taken the timing chain off of the sprocket(s) - ?? humfrz |
I've never timed one of these puppies, but procedure states you need to rotate the engine after timing bank 2 to time bank 1.
Bank 1 is timed with the sprocket timing marks in the aligned position, so bank 2 (left) needs to be at a specific offset to be timed. https://demos.starbase7.net/t3Portal..._rm_index.html Engine/Hybrid System > FA20 Engine Mechanical > Timing Chain > Installation |

Thank You! I did have the cams off the head to add gasket sealer to the caps after having them rebuilt. The heads came off a used 2013 and were rebuilt with larger valves and new valve components by IAG. They are in the zero lift position so you can rotate them by hand about 120deg. I bought another used cam sprocket and the tick mark gets closer to where it needs to be than the original cam sprocket but still doesnt get close enough (off by about 25-30deg). |

The exhaust cam on bank 2 lines up where it should but the intake can not be turned with in the "zero lift range or lightly by hand" to get the tick mark in the 2 O'clock position as shown in the diagram. It falls between 5 and 10 oclock. |

There is two timing mark on each cam. one is an arrow and the other is the tick mark on the circumference of the cam that is used to line up with the chains pink plate. The timing arrow you are referring to is at 3 o'clock instead of 8 o'clock |
It should be at 8. Mark "a"

If I had to guess you have one of the cam caps on backwards. They look symmetrical but they are not. You will notice they have arrows on them. If I recall the arrows should point towards the timing chain. Don't quote me on that though, check the manual to be sure. If you have one on backwards it will not rotate at all. If they are on correctly the cams should rotate with zero resistance. Edit: Just looked and the manual doesn't talk about the arrows but I found a picture of mine just before putting the valve covers back on and the arrows do point at the timing. Edit 2: Reading the whole thread it looks like this isn't your problem. Hahaha |
This TSB may also be handy. It gets a little more detailed than the manual:

Thank you for your help. I am not having trouble understanding HOW to set the timing. its just not lining up like it should lol. I am trying another camshaft next weekend to see if somehow the cam is twisted on the end because its either the cam sprocket or the camshaft. the tick mark is just so far off that i dont know what else it could be |
Maybe you've got the Bank 1 chain on Bank 2?
