Hi

What is the audio setup of our 2012-2014 local 86 High?

Does it have an amp for the door speakers?

Is there a low-pass filter going to the door speakers? I see the front tweeters and rear 3.5" have built-in high-pass filters (caps soldered on).
There are 4 wires going to the front tweeters, but the door speakers' two wires don't share the same colors.


Reason I'm asking is that I want to replace the speakers, and I'm contemplating whether to use the existing wires, or leave them unplugged and use my own wiring from the head unit.

I'd appreciate any input.

So I ripped out and replaced all the stock speakers over the weekend.

There's no amp in the car. Dashboard has 1" tweeters with high-pass cap soldered on, and a 3.5" gaping hole. The four wires going to the tweeter are two inputs from the head-unit and two passing to the full range 6.5" door speaker. In the rear there are 3.5" speakers on the metal bracket, with a high-pass cap also soldered on speaker.

I fitted a Hertz 2-way 6.5" woofer and 1" tweeter with passive crossover in the front. The tweeter installation was straight-forward, but the door required some hacking. I removed the factory speaker's cone and clipped the plastic struts that held the magnet and voice coil, and discarded the guts leaving a custom 6.5" door speaker bracket.

I drilled 4 holes on the top edge of the bracket and I fastened the new 6.5" using bolts. I connected the speaker to the factory wire plug so no additional laying of wires was needed.

In the rear, I fitted Hertz 4" Coax speakers. They are way too big to fit in the bracket's 3.5" hole. I drilled two holes on the outskirts of the and used spacers to fit the new 4" behind the bracket.

The sound quality, and range in the car is now fantastic. The stock, rough paper speakers were not producing much treble at all and are on their way to the garbage dump as we speak ;)

I removed the Hilux/Fortuner radio as soon as I could. Replaced it with a Kenwood DDX715WBTM

May I ask how much did the Kenwood unit set you back and Dongle?

The Kenwood Radio was quite expensive (thank you bonus). It was R9500 at SoundsLimited in Boksburg. It was a drop in fit; uses the same Toyota 86 Harnass and it fits the wider double DIN bay perfectly, without any spacers.

The Chinese-brand Miracast dongle was R699. I'll take some pictures over the weekend of it running Torque.

My Bluetooth ODB2 dongle is massive and old; I must get a super-mini one to use Torque while driving.

The Kenwood's sound is amazing. It's DSP works very well, and I'm really surprised at the quality and quantity of sound it produces, without an external amplifier.

It might not match the power of my Audiobank Henessey Class A 1400w 2-ohm stable amp driving 2x enclosed 12" subs that I had in my VW Jetta back in the day, but you can't compare the quality :)

Hi. Seriously considering the Kenwood to replace the OEM head unit, as I've had enough of the POS Polnav GPS.

Is the reversing camera still operative with the Kenwood set up?

Well the standard speakers sound out of tune the moment the doors are open I don't know if everyone else experiences this as it is a massive pain. they may as well have made a custom sound kit for the 86 as there are so many OEM kits around.

If anyone who upgraded their sound is looking to get rid of a standard speaker, I'm willing to give it a good home

I drive a 2013 Toyota 86 high and am constantly trying to do upgrades whenever im not broke. Currently with my sound im running pioneer throughout the car, and in the boot I have a 4000w infinity 4ch (2 ch bridged to the sub) and a 12" DVC Targa street series.

My biggest problem is that since the back board of the 86 is full metal (Unlike hatchbacks which just have that cheap cardboard), my subwoofer sounds great from within the car but from the outside all I hear is the boot rattling. Ive removed the plastic numberplate bracket and attached the numberplate to the car with double sided tape and a foam bushing inbetween, but still the issue persists. Any alternatives (I know sound deadening is one but it weighs down the boot lid abit)

what plastic number plate bracket?

i just did some sound deadening inside the lid, and added some foam strips to the plate to keep it from rattling. i have more issues with the parcel shelf than the exterior of the car...

The plastic numberplate bracket i was referring to was the one fitted to most cars which allows you to just slide your numberplate into the black plastic bracket rather than attatch the metal numberplate directly to the body. I see OEM has a great kit available for the brz/86 which has all the perfect sized speakers, speaker brackets and an 8" sub that fits nicely in the boot for maximum space. However conversion rates means its about 11,000 zar here for us. It sucks that due to the conversion rates, all great international upgrades (body kits,interior trims, header and titanium exhaust systems) are crazy prices
