Hyundai Veloster N vs FT86
 

Gotta say the look is growing on me and for about 30k msrp you get alot of car. Anyone have any seat time in the new N car? Valved exhaused, decent 6sp, solid brakes and tires out of the box, multi mode dampers, solid 4 pop that makes quoted power on 87 and not 91, bit more practically, and a real electronic front diff. Granted yes FWD and a hatch vs RWD dedicated sports platform. Anyone else want to chime in thoughts..

No slidey, no lovey

If everything goes as planned, I'm about a month away from being able to buy a new car. I'm pretty well set on a BRZ, but I can't pull the trigger on anything without doing my due diligence.

So I made a point of doing some comparison shopping. Several other candidates made it onto my radar, but once I began taking a good look at it, the Veloster N rocketed to the top of the list of runners-up. I asked my wife about it and showed her TheTopher's POV video of it. I wanted to take her pulse on it because if she had strong feelings about preferring the extra door and the increased cargo space I might have given it more thought. But she shut that right down, by reminding me that I'm going to be the only one using my car 99% of the time while she is stuck with the practical family car. So, no warm fuzzies from her on that.

I think the Veloster N packs a ton of value for the money. So many features that would make it a fun car to throw around every day. But when you boil it all down, there aren't enough things about it that are better than the FT86. For me, there are only a few: It's a tiny bit cheaper, it's got more power, and I like the light blue better than any of the Subaru colors. Still, those things aren't compelling enough to distract me from the BRZ!

Australia's Motoring ranked the i30 N (6th) and Civic Type R (2nd) above the BRZ TS (8th) and Miata RF (10th) in their Best Driver's test comparison. Both FWD cars are faster at the track too, with the CTR setting a really impressive time.

Personally I wouldn't take pick either FWD hot hatch over a proper lightweight RWD sports car, but it goes to show just how far these FWD platforms have come.

I absolutely love the way the Veloster looks, but I'm not interested in another fwd car.

I'm not a RWD elitist anymore. I've driven FWD cars that rotate better than most RWD cars (Fiesta ST).

The big thing that appeals about the Veloster N, is for the price you get:

-Motorsport included warranty
-Adaptive dampers that were literally designed to run race tires (Albert B. said in an interview the "full stiff" was designed for people that will upgrade to race tires) + mechanical LSD (In FWD this is an absolute necessity)
-Exhaust that pops and bangs w/ a real motorsport'ish style anti-lag calibration
-Hyundai reliability (Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have basically topped the reliability ratings the last ~3 years)

I like FWD in a tiny car, like a Fiat 500. Then those little front tired scramble for grip as you slide around like a puppy on waxed linoleum.

The Veloster N really tickles my fancy. I would need to drive one first, of course, but if I was in the market, I would definitely pick one up. I love the BRZ/ 86, but the N gives you a lot of value for what it is!

It might be my next car in 2-3 years possibly. Kids are getting older where having just 1 family car will not work... So having that 3rd door and hatch really appeals to me.

Just like the internet then 😂. Thankfully the engine responds decently to mods. E85 or a header is all it takes.

"decently" maybe. Keep in mind we live in an age that a simple flash tune is granting literally over 100 HP on cars like the new MK7 GTI.

Of all the new hot hatches the N is the one I want to drive the most.

The extra door makes it sort of more practical. I'm not overly enthusiastic over the price. Around 45k CAD out the door. Maybe less if you pay cash or find some insensitives on leftover stock. That's a lot for a Hyundai.

If I'm paying cash that buys a lot of used car. Maybe in a few years once the prices drop on used ones.

NA will never respond like a turbo car to mods. Apples to oranges IMO. For a NA engine, the FA20 responds pretty decently. Looking at 20-30 whp with bolt ons and/or e85.
