Rocket bunny kit = totalled car?

I'm seeing more and more cheap FT86 twins available in the PNW that have been "rocket bunnied."

So someone took a great car and cut up the rear quarter panels for a cosmetic kit.

I haven't asked a body shop yet, but read somewhere on this site that that totals a car.

It looks expensive to revert. Does anyone have direct experience and ballpark cost to restore to stock?

You can't really restore a car that has a widebody Rocket Bunny kit back to stock.

You have to actually cut portions of the fenders off the car under where the widebody fender add-ons sit when you install the kit.

You could technically replace the front fenders with new ones, but the rear fenders are built into the frame. You would have to cut the rear fenders off your frame, cut a set of rear fenders off another car, and weld the new fenders on to your car.

Every exterior part of the car can easily be replaced by a professional body shop.

However, my gut says cheaper just to find a non-bunny used car.

totaled is only if someone were to insist on bringing the car back to as-new condition, which would require almost all replacement exterior panels, and a lot of paint. so yeah, in that respect, the costs would cost close to what the car is worth. but it couldn't total it, as it couldn't be ran through insurance. i'm quite sure buying a modified car and then attempting to make insurance pay to bring it back to as-new condition would be insurance fraud...

I wasn't taking insurance. I was more interested in "totalled" as it affects value. e.g. a $5k rocket bunnied car is worth less than a $10k stock car.

Thanks.

worth is individually relative.

this is like trying to explain why a $60k bottle of wine is fundamentally worth more and tastes better than a $2.99 bottle.

i'd rather have the $2.99 bottle.

If you don't like the look then yea you shouldn't buy it. In terms of its value there are definitely people out there that would want a rocket bunny or widebody car that don't want to invest the time and money into doing it themselves. In that instance i'd say the car would be valued more than its stock form to that particular type of buyer

The thing is with used cars with rocket bunny kits, is who know what other garbage was put on. It's always better to get a non abused stock car. Less shanggans from the previous owner.
