Another rear-ended thread, anyone got experience if the repairs ever missed anything?

Did anyone ever start a go-to thread with their accidents and estimates?

Trunk lid is deformed and can't close. Bumper is gone. Apparently no spoiler damage. Reinforcement bar was bent. With the pandemic and everything, I feel like my adjustor is either lazy or has conflict of interest and is low-balling the quote. 4k for damages and pulling out and squaring the trunk. A lot of these threads are from years ago, and I would California and inflation would jack up these prices... My rear has already been "disassembled" and inspected, but I'll be going there to see for myself soon. Any advice from people that have been rear ended? Anything I should also look out for in case I am getting the smoke and mirrors treatment? |
the fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter. insurance is there to fix it, let them deal with it.
if you wanted stress and hassle, you'd fix it yourself in your spare time. |
Price can vary massively based upon location so what somebody else paid is of little help.
On the surface that is not an expensive fix just about anyplace though. It is what may be hidden under that cover that would cost the big bucks. |
Looks like an easy fix to me, replace bumper cover, rear impact beam and trunk lid, pull rear panel and paint...$4k seems reasonable.

The estimate I got from the most trusted shop up here a couple years ago was 5,527.30
The HRR HRR HRR behind wasn't paying attention when the person in front of me stopped to let a county sheriff pass before turning left. He wasn't laughing that estimate off. I had an expert witness at the scene. It's an estimate. Once they get into it and start pushing things back where they belong, the total costs are subject to change. Insurance are used to paying the difference and the shop is well informed on the process of extracting it when needed. The shop did a good job. The trunk was a bit harder to shut for a while, but that was the new seal rubber. The only difficulty I experienced was that I didn't have my twin available for the trip to east Oregon for the total eclipse. Had a dumb rental that wasn't very fun to drive. |

10k at the first shop for all of June 2021. No estimate yet from this second shop but they're essentially fixing the crap job the first shop did. I told my insurance co that I wasn't happy with the repairs that "Shop A" did so they let me take it to "Shop B" 2 weeks ago. I should have the car back tomorrow. I had a page and a half of issues that "Shop A" didn't actually fix. My guess is 10K was correct if the first shop had done their job correctly but the new total will be more like 12 or 13k, I'm guessing. EDIT: Also, hydroplaning and spinning into a guard rail is like getting rear ended if you're going backwards, right? lol |

Like ol @soundman98 suggests, just let the body shop and insurance company do their jobs and don't sweat it. It will be OK. |
If it was me...
I'd take the 4k, buy a used bumper and trunk off marketplace and spend the rest on mods but im probably the minority |
Honestly let the insurance handle it. Like it was said above, it's what you cant see that is the problem. Find a trusted reputable bodyshop to do the repairs. My only advice would be to make sure (if its not full coverage insurance) they use OEM parts and are a Subaru authorized repair facility, because they will meet Subaru's standards for repair. You have a right to chose what parts go back on your car, and your insurance can help you fight for that if you are concerned about it being put together right.
Little old lady rear ended my Honda a few years back and her insurance tried to cheap out because its old and parts are hard to get. But I told the insurance she destroyed an OEM bumper and I expect an OEM bumper to be put back on. And they did. |
