Lots of good info. Welcome to the forum!

Good info. I have often wondered if the oil feed to the heads should be restricted in favour of the crank and rods but you clearly have gone well beyond that :respekt:

Killer B Motorsport does a replacement oil pick up. The filter is in the same place as the OEM unit however, but it might be worth a look.

WOW! You put a bunch of thought and machining into that project!

Good presentation and pictures!

@solidsnake11 have you thought about using the Reimax hi volume oil pump? Or do you expect with your mods it will be unnecessary?

Trust86 11-15-2018 10:13 PM

Now you got me worried about my oil feed for turbo :/

Have you run the engine since making these changes? Most of these seem like good solid ideas to me but I am curious if there are any unforeseen effects of changes like these.

I am in the process of rebuilding the engine so no I have not ran it. I bought the car with a bad engine. The only mod that I'm not real sure about is shimming the oil pressure spring. If it blows the oil filter apart, I used to many washers in it. Had a VW that would do it, if it was reved cold.

Purolator Boss (#PBL14461) can withstand over 500psi before bursting. It has a thicker case than regulator oil filters.

Do you have any images of the cavitation marks?

Unfortunately I sealed the pump up before I took any.

Was it in the vicinity of either of the two areas circled? Which one?

I've seen reports of as high as 80psi when cold even with 0w-20 on these engines. I was apprehensive about your use of washers too knowing this. I can't imagine really wanting more. The pressure bypass does not seem to be a problem on this engine. Especially if you use heavier oil your pressure may be excessive on cold starts. What made you want to try the washers to begin with?

My oil pressure gauge reads 80-90psi cold at idle with 0W-20 in it. After a session on track, that may only be 30 psi at idle when the oil temp is in the 210-220 F range.

Right. So is 80-90 not enough pressure for a cold start? Shimming the bypass stiffer will only increase the maximum pressure the pump will produce. It won't effect hot pressure whether it's shimmed or not.

Seems this guy was having problem with oil pressure. He fixed it but never said how. I was just showing what I did, it may work or it may not. Did he shim the spring? Did he drill the block? Did he open up the port around the tempature sensor? Did he open up the pick up tube, straighten the entrance to the oil pump? I don't know but he fixed it. He had so much of a problem that he put an accumulator on it, who wants to have that to fool with on a dd? Not me.

Didnt they end up using a dry sump? Im pretty sure it was not an oil accumulator but an actual dry sump setup.
