rev limiter / fuel cutoff
 
I don't tend to do this on a regular basis, but I have het the limiter a fue times and it seems like it cuts in harsh compared to other cars I have driven. Almost like the car applies the breaks. I was just wondering what others opinions on this are. thanks

It is unforgiving....you hit it and the car goes "HEY MORON, I JUST TURNED YOUR GAS FLOW OFF"

Yup, I hit the rev limiter a few miles after breaking in. And yes it is pretty harsh.

It's aburupt feeling comes from the fact that this is a proper naturally aspirated high compression sports engine. And the compression is high to produce high resistance, and there isn't a heavy flywheel to stop it either. This combined with a light car makes it double harsh. The best way is to remove the limiter altogether, and to be good enough at driving to NOT over-rev the engine. :D
But with warranty that needs to go on cars and with number of inexperienced drivers who "THINK" they know how to drive, and even some seasoned guys... Factory cars will always have governors to keep it from self destruction as least as possible... :D

So there isn't really a way to soften this as if something is cut, then compression will slow it down more than a normal engine. Perhaps though, we will one day find a crack to the ECU so that it will fire half the cylinders and "LIMIT" the power output by ignition cycle/sequence, rather than cutting off fuel...and stopping the ignition cycles, making this a bit safer for the engine, and to reduce the bog-down effect.

I think my biggest problem is that I am used to my Celica GT-S and winding it to 8300 RPM's so I land the RPM's over the 6k VVTL-i mark when i shift. Also I tend not to look at my tach when I am driving aggressively and don't notice the shift light blinking. :(

also my gt-s has a fairly high compression at
11.5:1 with a lightweight flywheel and i don't get verry much of a slam feeling. But I also wonder if part of that is because the gt-s is at it's top RPM and is at the down side of it's power curve, where the FRS not so much.

You could try getting a Bee-R rev limiter. It cuts ignition instead of fuel, much safer for the engine.

or set the rev indicator with beeper ON so you hear it and don't have to actually see it?

Set a lower rpm limit and stick to it.
I hit the rev limiter sometimes as well when I track it and it means I waited too long to shift. Adjust shifting points, done. And you will be faster too.

I sometimes hit the limiter because I'm used to the sound my K20 made approaching 9k rpm and that was my cue. Now I'm like oh.. right!

How bad is this with the tires spinning? Sounds pretty crippling or a drift car.

I get into the limiter more often than I would like because the motor doesn't sound like it is done yet, it is still pulling so strong it is hard to believe you are at rev-limit already.

I'm not sure who told you you want unburnt fuel being flowed through your catalyst, but that isn't the smart move buddy. fuel cut on a NA motor is fine,

It really just feels like the motor wants another 500-1000 RPM to play with
