Asked directly if it could be headed for full-scale production he is enthusiastic.

“Yes. Definitely not no,” Tada tells News Limited.

“Yes, there is more potential than the convertible.”

The car was unveiled today (Friday) in Canberra ahead of the third annual Toyota 86 Festival in the national capital.

The Shooting Brake project began in November 2014 when Tada was first shown a clay model of the car which had been developed by Toyota Australia’s Product Design team.

It was fast-tracked in Japan and the display car in Australia this week is a fully-driveable prototype.

The car is a four-door with an extended 86 roofline that creates a hatchback-style boot.

The man behind the project, Toyota Australia’s chief designer Nic Hogios, says there was a lot of discussion on the original idea before his team settled on only making minor changes to the 86’s rear quarter and roof.

“Like kids in a lolly shop, we thought about re-styling more of the car. However, like good parents saying no to too many sweets, we made the conscious decision to keep as much of the original 86 as possible,” he says.

since the seats in the coupe fold down, I'm not sure the advantage is that great. But if I had a need for a car like that I'd buy one.

Yeah... I kinda wish they made it rounder in the back instead straight line. Or make it aggressive like this

Oh I totally consider 86 shootingbrake as my 2nd car... If they made it more like my style.

Also I've been begging Tada-san to make shootingbrake concept since day 1. I even told him that, I'll volunteer to design it & I'll gladly do it for free. Lol

I would have bought this! It just needs some suicide rear doors!

What happen to the curves of the car? It's went from sexy curves to flatline. The shooting brake concept really needs to go back to the drawing board. My vote is for @ichitaka05 for Shooting Brake Concept II.

I dont like it, i like the concepts better. Unfortunately its too mundane to look good as a shooting brake, it does need to be agressive.

To me it has this oddball Veloster / Panamera vibe to it, but the more I look at it the better it seems. Got to hand it to the team, they picked a good colour and did a really great job of making it look clean and production ready.

I think the design is actually pretty well resolved, but needs more aggression to bring it together. I wonder, for instance, how it would look with the full TRD body kit, quad exhaust and a nice set of wheels?

If they managed to include a glass roof similar to what Tesla do I think you'd be on to a pretty desirable car.

Also keep in mind, if... again IF they actually made this into production (w better lines), it'll come w kouki face & not zenki face

I seriously do not understand the black triangles on the rear fenders. They look super fake and ruins that rear. its one of the many things that ruin the car.

In addition to the Veloster similarities, I'm getting a subtle CR-Z vibe from it as well.

I like it, but I'm weird, I love Legacy wagons, Touring 3 Series, Z3M Coupes, etc.

Looks ok but the 86 slim front does not go good with the back.
