2022 TPMS backwards compatible?
 

Can we use prior gen TPMS sensors on the new car? It has a different part number, but...

Anybody know?

It looks like the new sensor is a Toyota part used on the Avalon and probably others. I think it should work since it's still 315 MHz. I will know for sure when I get my Winters installed with Tire Rack sensors.

That was my plan, I've got my VIN number and just waiting to order the wheels/tires as it'll be my daily for many reasons. Mostly just the fact that RX-8s get truly horrendous fuel economy on short trips when it's cold, lol

Update: I assumed that you only needed to match the frequency for a sensor to work, but there may be more to it.

I bought my Winters from Tire Rack with the sensor they sell for the first gen BRZ, which is the Pacific T5. My dealer was able to pair the sensors with the car with no TPMS warning light, but they wouldn't actually give a reading. Then when I tried to reset the TPMS, I got the warning light. I looked up the sensor that Tire Rack sells for the Avalon, and it's the Pacific T6. Both the T5 and T6 are 315 MHz, but I'm guessing that something else is different.

For reference, the manual for the second gen BRZ lists the FCC ID for the sensor as PAXPMVE000. This ID is also found in the manual for the Avalon, and that part is used in many Toyotas.

At this point, I'm going to wait for more definitive information before I do anything else. I can deal with the warning light and check my pressures manually for now.

Thanks for the update! I guess the easy answer is just buy the "right" Subaru sensors and have them installed but I'll just hold off until it's sorted.

Yep, that's what I get for being an early adopter. I'm going to keep playing around just in case I'm missing something obvious.

I don't mind buying the Subaru part, but it does come at a premium. Especially when it looks like Pacific is the supplier for all of these parts anyway.

I sure hope we don't need to go OEM to get something that works. My local subaru parts guy today said there are currently only 6 sensors in the US at $116 each. After just spending $360 for a set of tires (cyber monday deal), over $500 (after tax) for sensors is hard to swallow. I'm currently waiting to hear back from discount tire as well.

Assuming the T5 doesn't work, I hope the T6 ends up being the correct sensor. It's in stock and only $42.

Ian Claypool posted on FB, saying : PSA 2022 car has a new TPMS part number but the previous gen sensors will work and can be had on ebay(used) for about $10 each. Don't spend $600 on new TPMS sensors...

OK, so maybe my dealer just needs to program the sensors again.

I went to a different shop and they confirmed the sensors are paired, but still no pressure readings. So I would avoid the Tire Rack sensors for now and go OE.

How about Limited owners, if you want a 2nd set will the brz premium wheels and the correct size premium size 215/45 R17 read the exact same Speedo speed as the stock 18’s? I’m considering ordering the premium wheels to go with my winter setup. BUT alas how long to get the premium 17s from Subaru can’t imagine parts are available? I don’t want my mph to be inaccurate. When talking about speedo readings, you should be looking at revs/mile (or revs/km) of the desired tire.
Tires of the exact same specified dimensions can still have significantly different revs/mile :iono:

According to https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tir...-4?tyreSize=18, 215/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 make 840 revs/mile.

According to https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tir...-2?tyreSize=17, 215/45R17 Michelin Primacy HP make 844 revs/mile.

That's ~0.5% difference between them, meaning that at 100 mph they are ~0.5 mph off of each other, which most people will never notice.
In fact that's probably less difference than that between a new set of tires and somewhat used.

This is a long shot, but do any tunes disable TPMS? I know some harness plug in chips do, but they seem like a lot of money for what they do. As soon as it starts to act odd I would like the option to switch it off...
