Subaru recently released the first images of the Subaru BRZ STI concept, but they’ve now also released the first teaser images of the production Subaru BRZ coupe, ahead of its debut next month at the Tokyo Motor Show!

Though the general shape of the front fascia appears to be similar between the production Subaru BRZ and the BRZ STI concept, there are also significant differences. The top piece of the production front grille is body color matched and the bottom of the grille features two slats instead of mesh. The side vent area is filled in by round fog lights and what may be an LED light stripe. Click on image below for larger version.

Press Release:

Tokyo, November 7, 2011 - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, announced its presentation at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011. It will focus on "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" which is the core value provided to the customers through the Subaru automobile experience, the foundation being Subaru's global brand statement "Confidence in Motion".

SUBARU BRZ

1. Concept
Based on its product concept of "Pure Handling Delight", at its core is the Horizontally-Opposed engine known for its light weight, compactness, and low center of gravity. That combined with Subaru's rear-wheel drive platform, the SUBARU BRZ seeks a new level of lowness in center of gravity, one of the lowest in the world, and offers excellent handling performance. It is a sports car that can provide a pure handling delight experience to anyone behind the wheel.

2. Mechanisms
Founded on the third generation Horizontally-Opposed engine, the SUBARU BRZ carries a new 2.0 liter Horizontally-Opposed 4-cylinder engine which was specially designed to fulfill the desired factors of a sports car.
Specifically, the bore and stroke are set in a square formation of 86 x 86mm and combined with Toyota's direct fuel injection technology (D-4S), thus allowing higher output and more environmental friendliness - the ideal for a new age sports car.

And interesting physical specs at the Japan site (per ichitaka):

BRZ: 4,200x1,770x1,270

vs.

FRS: 4,240x1,775x1,285

but wheel base is the same... (both 2,570)

Oh! Maybe from this angle, it looks less smiley! I am intrigued...

btw, are those headlights with an LED strip?

Oh and last comment... where did you find it?

Wait, this one looks very similar to the prototype spotted running recently. I'm really excited to see what it will turn out in less than a month.

Edit: Never mind, it says production version. So we have the official name? Subaru BRZ?

From the comparison, I think I like the production version better. I have to see full picture in real life first.

Despite the "smiley" grill it's looking rather aggressive.

And FWIW, some STIs look sorta happy/smiley:

I didn't think the production model would show until the Tokyo show, not the LA show? Or did they change their mind??

Either way, by the end of the month we should have full definite photos and even videos! :D

I love the fact that it smiles it's one of the little major things that makes me want to buy it over the Toyota. Im so sick of the angry looking cars! they should be friendly but not lunatic like a Mazda 3. Thought I wouldn't say The Toyota is Angry more Handsome and aggressive. I like the BRZ's subtle aggressiveness with a smile. XD if that makes any sense.

Added teaser of headlights to first post:

Lol, I guess... but isn't an insane lunatic smile even scarier than aggressive? XD
