2016 BRZ Crackle map not working

Hi All,

I've searched around and cannot find an answer. Bit of a stupid question but I am very interested as to why a crackle map wont work on the 2016 AUDM BRZ.

The car is turbo and has no cats, and just 2 mufflers. It pops very loud on occasion, so I assume a crackle map is possible.

However, I have not been able to get a crackle map working. Usually I pull -10 or -15 degrees from the low engine load regions in the base ignition timing map, I've attached a screenshot if it helps.

This is what everyone online usually does as it's basic and simple, but it seems as if the car is fighting the requested -10 timing. I can see in the logs the car just returns back to 35 degrees timing when feathering the throttle.
I also tried changing the target AFR to 9.5 and base timing to -15 with the RACERom custom maps. But again the timing does not retard or change from 35 degrees and the target afr stays the same. It's as if the car has built in protection to stop the user from doing stupid things.

I attached a log screenshot to show my attempt with 2 custom maps M and N. You can see M is requesting an AFR target of 9.5 and N is requesting -15 degrees of base timing. But nothing actually changes.

I am just wondering if any one has been able to get this working? Also now interested as to why the ECU is doing this.

Thanks,
Chris.

What RPM are you trying to do this at?

About 4k or so. Tried several rpm ranges. Same thing.

it 's probably too "low" the 0.2 engine load
try reducing timing up until 0.25 or 0.3 engine load

about the 2 custom maps, are they enabled or maybe debug mode still active? maybe post here the config of these 2 custom maps

The AFR controlled in custom maps is opwn loop afr. For off throttle crackle that wont work as its will be in closed loop or idle overun mode.

also as Tom said put the retard at higher load as well

Because fake crack pop tunes are lame and your car knows it. Just don’t. My neighbor has a crackle tune on his BMW, it’s absurd going 15 mph down the road with crackles and pops. Annoys everyone. Just say no, like your ecu is.

Thanks for the replies. Agreed, fake cracks and pops are a bit lame. But the euro scene seems to love this enough that manufactures have programmed burbles and crackles into the factory ECU.

Regardless I got this working with custom maps after reading tomm.brz's post. Turns out the maps were in fact in debug mode. However it does not work well, cracks are not that loud. Even with -20 degrees timing and targeting 9.5 afr.

I get louder cracks on occasion (like a shotgun) by just driving spiritedly.
So I'll probably just leave it there for now. No point damaging the car.

Thanks all.

It's normal to see videos from some car meets of specific fans of such atrocity posted on youtube or other platforms. It's meet of niche people that are there for that. Rarely though anybody puts on youtube something like interviews of annoyed neighbors and emotions of other common folk regarding that. Even though they are much more numerous yet usually less voiced on social media.
Don't judge by misrepresented numbers / skewed information from what's "on internet". Or sometimes wrong impression can be corrected by pleasant surprises in ways of broken with brick car window, scraped paint or punctured tires from all the grateful neighbors for all the audial enjoyment one presented to them and their children in mid of the night.

If no cats than am surprised. Maybe the tune for your turbo is interfering. All you should have needed to do is Set an RPM range to "-8" in only the "0.15" column on Ignition Advance B.
