How I support the engine with a tie-down strap when removing the transmission
A few things to keep in mind.

How often does this really need to be done?

I just assumed it was an ancient engine yoga technique that allowed for better oil flow.

Thanks for the pics. The routing underneath: is it pretty much straight down the sides and then across the oil pan?

Oh ok -- it looks like you're hooking onto the two black stamped steel covers on either side of the intake manifold. |
That looks way more convenient the using a jack.

I like this method -- went outside and checked out those steel covers; yes they do seem sturdy enough to hold the engine still via the tie down. Set it once and forget it for the duration of the job. With a jack, it's in the way as you're working and moving back and forth to and from under the car; it's too easy to bump it out of place; and as I learned, also pretty easy to jack it back up too much when replacing a jack that's been bumped out of place. |
...........or when the jack that is supporting the engine is twisted and you can't get the trans jack forward enough to stab the trans into place. Ask me how I know about that one :bonk:

Lol yeah... pulling and replacing the tranny to change the TOB has to be the most unpleasant job I've done on this car. I dented my oil pan by over-jacking the engine after the jack got bumped out of place, and wound up having to replace that. Spent hours trying to cut through the FIPG holding it on. I gave up at one point. Then I got this tool and once it arrived, I was able to cut through the FIPG in a few minutes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011DR95WM/ And then I had costochondritis for a couple of weeks afterward, from wrestling with a 86 lb hunk of metal for hours, on my back, with about 18 inches of vertical space to move around. Not fun. But, if I have to do it again to fix my small oil leak coming from somewhere in the bell housing, I'll be using this method to keep the engine from tilting forward. :) |
