Will you wait for the second model year to purchase your 86?

Do you trust Toyota/Subaru enough to purchase the car on release, or will you wait for the second model year to see any potential issues with the cars?

Discuss.

Kenji 10-18-2009 12:39 AM

Always potential for first year model issues but I got faith in Toyota's quality (and warranty). They got 2 years to test and work out the kinks anyways and I'm sure any first year issue would be minor fixes or recalls and covered under warranty. I'd be willing to deal with that to be the first on the block with the car. Plus, I don't think I could stand just watching the other guys here take delivery and post pics of their cars. :D

I'm in for the first year!

Agam 10-18-2009 02:02 AM

if i were to pick this car up, i'd probably wait till the 3rd model year of this car.. why? i realized 1st year models do have kinks, the 2nd year has some kinks that are ironed out as well, but by the 3rd year we'll at least have an idea how this car holds up with some miles on it.

86Fan 10-18-2009 03:48 AM

I might wait until the 1st year model ends to see if there is any thing different for the 2nd year. 2nd year might be a bit cheaper to get too.

Jordo! 10-18-2009 06:15 AM

Unless there's a reason to wait for a specific option/variant promised to come in the second year, yep, first year.

scape 10-18-2009 10:41 AM

probably the end of the first model year if I can swing it, that or the beginning of the 3rd (if there are no major changes) and try and buy a 2nd year model from a dealership to save some money

dante 10-18-2009 11:49 AM

Bought the '05 tC in October of '04, ~4mo after it had been released. Only issues were:

1) They had a TSB for a shattering sunroof, but wasn't really a big deal.
2) Some had a "rattle" that I never had.

Otherwise it's been a solid car for the past 80,000 miles.

FormulaJDM 10-18-2009 01:12 PM

This isn't the 1970's any more. I bought my 1991 MR2 the first year and it was a great car until I sold it in 1998. I'd buy the first year without a thought.

Same here. Plus that's what warranties are for. There's always going to be a newer model, better options, etc. Can't stand on the sidelines forever waiting for someting better.

MTD 10-18-2009 02:46 PM

I work in a Toyota plant and I see first hand how changes are made on an ongoing basis to always build and improve on the high quality standards that Toyota is known for. Quality is of very, very high importance when the cars are being assembled. Sure problems will occur and defects do happen, but Toyota does its best to correct them.

We we first starting building the "new" model Corolla and Matrix they lines ran very, very slowly to ensure that there were very few issues with the new cars. When there were, it was usually a design or engineering issue and not a build quality one.

Im guessing that even if Subaru is going to build the FT86 that Toyota will make sure it is done correctly and to their standards.

if subaru makes it, it will be done correctly. don't forget, subaru builds camry's for toyota in west lafayette, Indiana (in a subaru plant) ;)

mrmixitup 10-18-2009 04:06 PM

Toyota isn't exactly Mazda (RX-7) or Nissan (Spec-V, 350Z). I'd risk buying the car in the first year.

OldSkoolToys 10-18-2009 05:01 PM

1st year, 1st month, 1st week, 1st day it hits showroom floors.

I have a close friend who works at a Toyota dealership, gonna see if I can't get him to get one ordered to the place per my specs, so I can buy it first day. =P

Then the plant must produce top quality vehicles if Toyota chose to build the Camry there.

ichitaka05 10-18-2009 09:18 PM

Hm... That's a hard Q. Cuz like AP1 & AP2, next gen could have 2.2L instead of 2L engine to put more TQ... but at the same time... I'm not sure if I can wait til 2nd Gen 086A to come out.

slimfit 10-18-2009 09:51 PM

I've had good luck so far with my 06 Si that I got the first year, while many others have had multiple issues. When the time comes again I will wait till 2nd year just to be sure.

Ricepuddin 10-18-2009 10:50 PM

no, ill get first year. Its a Toyota they have a pretty good rep of not screwing up

White Comet 10-19-2009 01:15 AM

Toyota or no, first year models ALWAYS have some kinks. I'll wait, save more money, spend less on the car (you'll get a better deal once the initial wave of must haves are done), and potentially get a more potent car (depending on what Subie or Toyota or planning for this thing).

Jokem 10-19-2009 12:29 PM

^ Agree that first year models always have their kinks or aspects that can be improved on. Take the S2000 AP1. I believe the 2000-2001 models had the plastic rear window problem, under powered radio (though you can argue it never did reach an accpetable limit - I thought it was fine =P), and some suspension tweaks (1).

If you can restrain yourself - you can only win by waiting. Lets say Toyota does nail the first model year with no problems at all. Great you can pick up a used one for considerably less. If they overlook somethings - you can buy into the revised model and benefit =)

But then again, there is always that nice feeling of being the first person to own something!

I'm also in an 05 tC and have no problem picking this up its first year. As soon as they make the official production announcement I'm heading down to the dealer to throw down a deposit.

MODyssey 10-19-2009 03:27 PM

I'll be picking one up straight outta the gates. I've owned several Toyotas and they're the most dependable cars I've had. I have no reason to believe that this one will be any different. I just have to decided between black and that beautiful red that's on the concept...wow.

PuGZoR 10-19-2009 08:13 PM

I reckon I'd buy one straight up. As previously mentioned, Toyota has been making cars for a long time now. I don't believe there would be many (if any) epic fails.

Uras 10-20-2009 08:10 AM

if I were to get one, Id probably wait for the kouki

S2KtoFT86 10-21-2009 10:57 AM

I will most assuredly wait for the second year before purchasing one. My reasoning is derived from my s2000 in which from 2000 to 2001, the windscreen was added, and then from 2001 to 2002, the glass window was added. So, better interior features may just be added from year to year that would make me want to wait a year or two before jumping in the ship. :party0030:

True, but at the same time, you know they gonna make better one each yr... it's never ending.

Very true. I think the latest I'd wait would be the second year. Don't really want to wait past that to get in on the ground floor with aftermarket parts.

FT///R86 10-21-2009 02:00 PM

I think I might wait. It would depend on the packages and options that Toyota offer. More than likely I would pick up the 2012 model in white, no sunroof and no navigation. I hope they offer and lsd option.

Exactly what I'm thinking. '12 in white, no sunroof, but you have to get the navi!! :bonk:

Yeah, I remember reading about that too, but I think Toyota decided to sell the FT-86 here too (I'm praying).

Shevon 10-21-2009 08:04 PM

I'd really hate if that were the case. In any event, if we didn't get a factory turbo'ed version, I plan on turboing mine and rebadging the scooby if that's what we end up getting. Really praying for a turbo'ed Yota version. :(

mettler 10-22-2009 04:04 PM

when is this supposed to be available? I keep seeing conflicting times/dates..anywhere from next summer to two years. Two years is too far away..dammit all

There isn't exact date yet

DanZilla 10-24-2009 11:13 PM

Any issues that come with it, I'll just end up fixing them lol

Only because there is nothing in Toyota's inventory that appeals to me. The Ft will hopefully change that.

I think next summer would be overly optimistic. I think two years is probably pretty accurate... and yea too far away :mad0259:

At least we got this place to shoot the sh*t with each other about the car until then. Hopefully before you know it ppl will be posting pics of their just delivered FT86s

cr22 10-25-2009 06:43 PM

We should all agree to stop mentioning the massive amount of time until its release.

Deal?

I can't believe some of you would have the patience to wait 3 years; this isn't some BMW 335i it's a Toybaru! Quality should be fine.
