Anyone here had the 86 as their first choice but went BRZ instead?
 

Hi all,

So to be quite honest I was very set on the 86, however I am planning on getting rid of my current car asap and trying to land a new one while the market is good for my civic.

86 will come out much later in the year likely Nov/Dec and I'm not sure if I can wait that long, I also feel like it will be a headache trying to land MSRP.

I inquired at my local Subaru and they told me the owner decided to sell all the 2022 BRZ's at MSRP without any additional markup, and I can get the car 8-12 weeks from now.

I mostly wanted the 86 for very small differences, front bumper, nicer premium wheels, nicer badging, and the rear decklid spoiler. All subjective but I definitely like the styling more, however the 86/BRZ are essentially the same car.

Anyone else in my same boat?

I initially liked the GR86 more, but after seeing the BRZ with all of the accessories, it's really grown on me. Plus I like the interior more with the contrast stitching and not the dull grey stitching Toyota uses. It's a small gripe, but it just degrades the interior to me.

I have been flip flipping on looks but I like the more sophisticated BRZ bumper now, especially with the STI lower aero.

Mechanically the BRZ seems more improved than the GR86. Sounds like Toyota didn’t really want to change stuff, or they want to keep cost down by reusing ZN6 parts.

#BRZMasterRace still rings true IMO.

100%…I really have to force myself to like the bumper of the BRZ but with the STI lower lip it makes a big difference. I’m for sure adding one. I’ve been looking at images of the white STI parts promo car with the swan neck spoiler and that whole look has actually grown on me, including the Enkei wheels especially in Bronze. I could do without the swan neck spoiler but the car does look a lot better with the new lip kit which I’m happy is a gloss black so that it can get some PPF.

I do like the stitching better but personally it's not a huge factor for me

I agree the aero makes it look much better, but without a doubt I do like the more aggressive 86 bumper much more. Also Subaru did do most of the engineering and it seems prime for track days while also having the ability to slide, while the 86 seems more tail happy

IIRC you need 10 posts/replies before the like button shows up.

I think the GR86 will be easier to break loose but harder to control the slide, while the Subaru will be the opposite.

This reminds me of when I test drove an FR-S in 2012 in the damp, and it would not take a turn at decent speed without sliding. The brz slides when you want it to, the FR-S slides when it wants to. That’s a bit over simplified but my expectation of grip was much closer to reality in the BRZ than the FR-S.

That's pretty accurate, but that was easily corrected with a tire change. I had a lot of slightly sideways adventures before I changed tires. After that, it has never been an issue.

Toyota dealership is much closer than Subaru dealership for me. Assuming I buy a twin, Toyota for me.

i really liked both equally but being forced to get the duckbill on the higher trim model killed the GR for me.

These are the things that trip me up, trying to decide which I want.

If there is a problem, it's a Subie motor, I'd rather have the Subaru tech working on it.

I like the GR86 bumper and ducktail more, and Neptune Blue is REALLY growing on me.

The BRZ Limited gets an upgraded stereo, and there is no indication/confirmation the GR86 Premium does.


I'm not too worried about things like the STi lip for the BRZ, because certainly companies are already working on their own aero parts (But no widebody garbage for me).

I have the same debate about which one to get. Especially concerning the motor. I doubt my local Toyota dealership has as much experience with the FA20 or boxer motors as the local Subie dealer. But, I like the look of the GR86 more, and the car wouldn’t exist without them.
Honestly I’m leaning towards the BRZ this time. I owned an FR-S so I’ve had the Toyota product. I also really appreciate the extra attention Subaru gives to the BRZ, and the more premium feel of it. You buy these cars to be fun to drive, not the interior, but Subaru puts more effort into it.

I thought I was being a fanboy for having this impression. The Subaru just feels nicer. I just hope that translates in person too.
