Will it swap...?

What will be swap-able? No one knows yet, but I for one am eager to see if the new 86 has a swap-able transmission. Considering the new 86 will most likely get the FA24, will the transmission be the same or strengthened?

As someone who is approaching 80k miles and who is boosted, my transmission could use replacing. The gears and/or syncros in my car were already roughened up by the first owner. Fifth gear in particular doesn’t engage smoothly or easily. At a bar of boost, I have no idea if the transmission will hold out for very long, but the transmission is one of the bottlenecks for power upgrades, so if the new 86 has even moderate upgrades to the internals to support any increased torque then that would be nice.

Obviously the engine will be something people look to swap. I heard people mention rim lug pattern. I’m sure any brake upgrades are likely to be swap-able, but I’m not expecting anything. Any interest in the seats if they improve?

I too am excited at the prospect of a different swappable transmission, but the realist in me says that they won't change anything.

Here's hoping for straight cut gears and serious axles

The torque rating on the stock trans isn’t very high, even if it can hold more torque. They might upgrade the transmission. They did a hard coating for 6th gear with the MY17+ models. Why? I don’t know.

You don't do 2 step 15psi launches in 6th gear? Come on dude. That was the first thing I did.
I do agree that it's be nice if the transmission could hold a little more, to the tune of 450 or so wtq

The stock transmission says 250nm capacity, which is a 184ftlbs, which is 34 over stock, but might be pretty close to what the 2.4l could produce, so maybe they would want to increase its capacity for reliability. Obviously it can handle a lot more as is, but for being overbuilt for reliability, I could see them increasing it.

I think T/S will have to upgrade the transmission in some way. Maybe harden the gears and improve the synchros? Even at stock torque levels I have to baby 2nd gear, and 5th is getting notchy. I want to do a fluid change soon and see what that does. But I’m nervous about which brand to choose.
It would be awesome if it easily swapped into the 1st gen! Especially for you guys with more power. Are there any common transmission swaps? Like from the STI or something?

what do they have to harden? it is a notchy transmission, much more satisfying than any rubbery and cable operated shifters out there.. are you babying 2nd because you think you're going to break it? i've had mine since new, at 70 K miles right now, haven't changed trans fluid, been banging 1st to 2nd shifts nearly every day without any problems. :iono:

Forced induction changes the game here.

I guess we can dream. At this car's pricepoint, I'm not seeing it.

It would be nice to see the manufacturer acknowledge and support the tuner market with options, but as a budget sports car, I don't see them spending more to support more HP than the car ships with, unless it's just accidental because they reused a transmission from an SUV or something that's already beefier.

The tough part is keeping customer interest. There's less than a 10thh of a percent of people who would be OK driving a car with straight cut gears. I'm not sure what considerations they take into account for axles, I'm assuming that building them to support x power level is cheaper for them and they won't change the design because they already have the tooling for that specification.

To be honest, I feel that they did a lot with this chassis to support aftermarket, especially dual injection modality. This car is such a lego piece, it's an amazing configuration. I really wouldn't have asked them to to it any other way. Except maybe with a Toyota engine...

yeah, I think they hit a good balance for sure with the twins. It would be cool to see some really serious options, maybe from TRD, like a super stout transmission - things that are hard for regular aftermarket vendors to develop and put out.

I get that, but the dude I was quoting is stock..too many people complain about the notchy feel as though the transmission is failing..

But anything "hard" for regular venders to develop and put out is the same for them. They are not going to pour money and resources into special trannies or diffs to sell a couple of hundred a year to the die hard racers. That is exactly what the aftermarket is for. Like Dark said there is a very very very limited market for such things and it is not the car companies that need to fill that hole. I don't want to pay thousands more for a car because 2 people want straight cut gears (if you ever street drove a car with them you would understand why they are rare) and that is what would happen.
Now if they could sell thousands of them and make loads of cash...

People that have only driven FWD with all their linkages and cables think it feels wrong. Those that have driven direct connected RWD on any sort of regular basis get that that is just how they feel.
I will take "notchy" yet precise over smooth and vague any day.
