Toyota FT-86 / Subaru 216A: They come at the end of 2011 indeed!!!

In a 東京新聞 (Tokyo Newspaper) interview with the President of Fuji Heavy Industries Mori Ikuo, it was revealed that the Subaru version will be presented at the end of 2011, and from what I could understand from the Japanese text, it will be revealed in December. Toyota is expected to launch it also at the same time.

The article also reveals that testing, as well as the body of the car have been almost completed, and tests are been carried out at the moment in order to fine tune the car for foreign markets. Mori revealed that the car is very comfortable and fuel efficient. The low seating position, in conjunction with the low centre of gravity, result in feeling very confident in driving it.

The price will be around 2,500,000 ¥.

2,500,000 yen = 30,000 usd

This better be one amazing machine for the base price to be that high.

At this point though, if it turns out to be nothing more than a RWD DC2 Integra Type R I would be more than happy and probably line up to be first to get buggered for $30,000.

I forsee Toyobaru pricing themselves right out of their intended market if they continue down this path. Then the bean counters can say we told you there was no market for this type of vehicle now back to making multiple prius derivatives because that's what the mouth-breathers want.

BoostJunkie 12-29-2010 02:50 PM

I guess we arnt gonna get HP numbers till just before it drops

it's been said many, many, MANY times that you can't do a straight currency conversion from yen to dollar in order to speculate on the price of a car. generally speaking cost of living is much higher in japan and the price of any consumer product is higher in japan than it is in the us.

example: the FJ Cruiser in japan costs 3,140,000 yen. the cost of an FJ Cruiser in the US is 25,000-27,000. there's no telling how much this car is gonna cost until a US price is announced officially from toyota.

You can't just do a currency conversion to get the price we'll have to pay here. Take a look at all the cars sold both here and in the UK. A simple currency conversion doesn't accurately reflect the prices people pay.

Same thing happens when you compare prices in Japan to prices here. 2009 Honda S2000 cost $35,000 here, but 3.8M Yen in Japan (http://www.relojapan.com/livingcost.asp). If you assume the same ratio applies here, then a 2.5M Yen car in Japan ends up costing about $23,000 here. That's been about what people have been predicting.

The major caveat is the Yen is getting stronger, so the ratio might end up being a bit different, but the main point--that you can't simply do a currency conversion to predict the price of a car in USD by using the price of a car in Yen--still stands.

Edit: Thank you Cyde01. Sorry for the repeat post.

awww yeeeeeeeeeeeah!

70NYD 12-29-2010 06:19 PM

This is very interesting. Can't wait for this bloody thing :D
On a side note, yen isn't stronger, it's more or less same it has been since before the gfc. The usd just isn't worth shit any more :p

CR-Z JDM MSRP 2,270,000 Yen
CR-Z USDM MSRP $19,000 USD.

As it's been said a million times, you can't do a straight conversion.

I predict a ~24k MSRP +/- $500 bucks depending on how the Yen swings this year.

Strength/weakness of a currency is always gonna be relative.

NikostC 12-29-2010 11:32 PM

Yea, we tend to get all cars for about 40% cheaper than the rest of the world.. so about 23,000 seems about right for a FT-86

Shevon 12-30-2010 01:51 AM

That rendering does look appealing. Can't wait

SUB-FT86 12-30-2010 08:34 AM

I wonder which model will be pricier? I'm thinking the subaru.

DantKR 12-30-2010 08:35 AM

Can't wait. A little surprised that the Subie version might come out before the Toyota considering how much info on the Subie version we've seen.

Eh? No where has there been any such speculation made at all. in fact, the blog post speculates that the subaru and toyota will be released at the same time. let's not get baseless new rumors started.

70NYD 12-30-2010 10:55 PM

Or LET'S START A RUMOR? how bout that and see how many mags it ends up in haha

That sounds good for a base price -- although I wouldn't mind paying 30K or more for a loaded (boosted!?) one.

Hell, whether or not I end up buying one, I just want to test drive this thing already :burnrubber:

Likely.

That's fine -- I still see this thing as having the potential (with boost?) to compete with the 370Z. Lighter, better handling and braking -- it can do it with less power.

I'm in bed with the Z, but fantasizing about the FT-86 :bellyroll:

Meh, say it a million more and it will still be repeating like a broken record.

I would guess closer to $25k since the price quoted is 2.5mil yen. But based on those numbers you posted MatadorRacing, it could be closer to $21k. That would be a pleasant surprise.

Looks like I'm waiting for the baby FT for certain.
At least we finally we have an release date :happyanim:.

Dark 01-03-2011 02:47 AM

I say 23K is more realistic. They don't want FT-86 to hurt tC sale, so they need to up the price of FT-86 to differentiate tC from FT-86.

no_name 01-03-2011 11:25 AM

Hopefully it gets priced to compete with the 2.0T Genesis Coupe, so I think we can expect a sub-24k price tag.

Oh I agree. And that it would. circa $30k for a loaded, boosted model is more than fair. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that it'd obliterate the Z on a track.

My math says $24k, but I wouldn't have a problem with $21k.

$24k +/- $500 is $23,500 - $24,500 ..... :iono:

Lets start a bet on the FT-86 starting price (regular NA base model, no stripped track version or turbo version or Gs). :bellyroll:

p.s. I think the tC is a fairly different target market, but... maybe, who knows.

Dimman 01-03-2011 04:18 PM

^^^ Does this price game include the ridiculous dealer mark ups that will happen?

kiya 01-03-2011 09:26 PM

Dealer mark-ups on this model will be super high, especially if it lands below $28K or so.
After hearing about the engine in today's news it looks like it's worth every penny.

Neutral_Eyes 01-03-2011 09:37 PM

I don't know how Toyota can discontinue all sporty/sports car models because "they don't sell" then allow dealers to mark up their new sports car anticipating good sales.

I don't think "they don't sell" isn't the main reason why Toyota discontinues all the sports car. Some reason might be Emissions, other one could be Safety and lists just goes on

I dont like this info.............. I DONT HAVE MONEY!!!!

I was hoping for a mid 2012 release date so by that time I would have had full cash.

EDIT:

I just hope whenever this car comes out, it will stay true to its words. ( oh and still look good as well XD)

BoostJunkie 01-11-2011 08:07 AM

I was hoping for 300bhp like the rumor from the Toyota reps

ft86cbx 01-11-2011 08:13 AM

Well the G turned up at the UAE motor show (seen here from about 3:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-0O6UzfBHU)

They were talking within the next 2 years.

I think order books open Nov/Dec for May delivery.

Not to sound like your accountant but I'd wait for till 2012, esp if you don't have any money. No need to rush out and buy the first year unless you absolutely have to. I'm still getting TSB's on my Tacoma and that thing is 6 yrs old.

NESW20 01-11-2011 02:41 PM

what TSB's are you getting on your taco???

NESW20 01-11-2011 02:49 PM

btw, i glanced at those links. looks like the same bs rumors that have been around for months. :iono:

cyde01 01-11-2011 02:50 PM

read the japanese article. it really doesn't say anything about turbo charging, 300hp, or march release. it says release date will be end of 2011.

So UAE gets tC as Zelas with more goodies over tC? Damn, I'm leaving the US now.

Don't worry, I will wait for 2012 because by that time i should have enough money. We will should see this car on Top gear by that time.

Lets just hope it even comes out.

( This will be my first new car purchase )
