TRD PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER QUESTIONS?

Hi everyone, I have a couple of questions for my TRD air filter. On My 2013 FRS

1- Could I use the K&N "Kleen" Cleaning kit & oil on this filter?
2- What are your opinions? My mechanic said he would personally replace the filter even if it's reuseable. He mentioned that even if it's reusable it will never be the same as new, which Is why he would replace it.
3- What are the cleaning intervals for this filter? And could you guys link me to a DIY on how to clean it exactly. I'm just worried I will mess up lol. I AM A NOOB AT THESE FILTERS. Thank you guys, I appreciate your responses

1) K&N oil should work fine. I would use the TRD stuff cuz thats how I am.
2) I would clean it. Maybe at 100,000km's I would replace it if I can find one.
3) somthing like 48,000km's. Mine is at 42,000km's and its a bit dirty on the front part near the inlet but the rest is still allright. No need to clean this filter too often under normal street driving as it has a large surface area and under normal use only a small part of the filter is "used" for a lack of a better term.

anything else?

There are two types.
http://res.cloudinary.com/rallysport...55_00009_1.jpg
Paper type. Not reusable. Throw it away.

Reuseable cotton/plastic type.

2. Many people have used reusable type for years, that is how k&n filters makes money. They don't filter as well as paper type, but it is a compromise when you want reusable and want to make power(less restriction/less filtering). Don't listen to your mechanic and find a new one. Ask him if he replaces the crush washer when changing the oil drain plug out.

3. Read the manual or just do it every year or two. It depends on where you drive also. I cleaned my afe dry filter at 10k miles and it was very clean. Look it up on google on how to clean it. I just hosed mine off from the opposite direction of the air inlet until the water was clear and let it dry overnight.

Like said, if it's paper, it should be replaced, if it's reusable it should be cleaned every now and then.

How do you know .. ?? If it looks dirty, clean/replace it.

How often, depends on your driving conditions. I see you live in Texas, so if you live "in town" not as often as if you lived back a dusty dirt/gravel road.

I have the TRD drop in for my BRZ and K&N for other vehicles, just follow the cleaning procedure found here when it's time to clean it: http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm
LPT: Hang on to your OEM paper filter so you can still drive your car while the TRD filter is drying overnight.

I bump this old thread.

I'm getting a trd air intake for my '13 gt86 (got it at a very reasonable price).

Which are the good drop-in air filters for it? I read that the filter from a '05 matrix fits perfectly, is that right?

Summerwolf 01-30-2018 01:11 PM

The trd intake comes with its own, specific reusable filter. It works just fine.

Unfortunately I get it without the filter

That's odd. Just buy the correct trd intake specific filter then.

This ^
Not sure anything else will actually fit properly and the real filter will last forever with the right maintenance.

Thanks! I just did a quick search on Amazon and ebay, and it's out of stock or not even listed :iono:

I will ask the dealer tomorrow.

Or if anyone knows the size of the filter, I could look for an alternative.

Norway it's definitely not the easiest place to get parts for my gt :)

Op if you have the trd filter and box or just the reusable filter the dealer has trd oil and cleaner for it. Make sure you pat off any excess oil. If it’s the paper disposable then it has to be replaced but it’s crazy if the reusable one the mechanic is telling you to replace it. FYI if a mechanic can not tell the difference between a reusable and paper air filter please find another mechanic.

Update from the dealer: "we can't get the filter as it doesn't appear to be in our system", well great :)

Anyone who could tell me the size of it? Sorry to bother

Or, a question for those who live in the US, is this filter easy to get from any dealer? I'll be in LA for few days in the end of march, I could wait and get it while there.
