2016 Toyota 86 GTS Street/Track Build

Hi all. After a very long time, I can finally call myself a Toyota 86 owner!! Owned it for 4 days now and already racked up over 500km!! Absolutely love her. Here are a few pics of her bone stock. Have quite a few plans for her.

Aim of the vehicle- this is my daily driver. Take it for a drive on the back roads every fortnight or so. Would love to get into track days and do 4-5 a year. As car will be under warranty for two more years, any forced induction will have to wait until then. Function will come before form. Won't be the prettiest thing out there but everything added will serve a purpose. My end vision would see my 86 with around 320whp. I think 320 is right on the edge of the power meeting the capabilities of the chassis. Turbo or supercharged? Depends what day you ask me!!

Been researching this car on these forums since the day it came out and years before I would ever lay my hands on one. For the first couple of years I was set on the sprintex supercharger. Loved the fact it has heaps of low end torque. Never thought about turbos as thought they would cause too many issues. Fast forward a few years, I was really loving Verus Motorsport aero parts and I was following their shop car and saw they had a turbo kit by a company called full race. At first, I confused them for Full Blown. After doing some research into Full Race as well as watching Speed Academy's tour of their facilities on Youtube, I saw they made some real awesome products. Then I had to decide ok what kit do I want but I had nowhere near the knowledge to make such a decision. Here in Australia, Garrett is pretty much the go to turbo but I had heard a bit of Borg Warner. After researching the EFR series turbos I realised ok, no matter what kit I get, I need a Borg Warner EFR turbo. Full Race where the only ones making manifolds with twin scroll. Yes here in Australia there are some EFR series kits but all with single. Was I was like ok mad, Full race it is. After learning more about turbos and understanding how to read compression maps and how to make your own calculations, I determined that for what I wanted at the time (roughly 300whp) and really responsive, I would go for the EFR6758. Yes the 7163 spooled only 500RPM later but I knew I would never reach the power numbers where the 7163 was real beneficial over the 6758. In about September, I was pretty much set on buying the kit that month. Had already contacted custom brokers for importing the kit and had everything sorted ready to go.

Then I bought my car. Had two years warranty left and I didn't want to go FI and waste warranty so decided not to buy the kit. I have continued doing my research and I have kept going back and forth with turbo or supercharger. Do I want the Sprintex for awesome daily drivability? The Harrop for a supercharger with the potential to meet my power needs? Or go the Full Race and having all the flexibility in the world for not much more. Then I got the bright idea of why not twin charging using the sprintex for awesome low end torque and the full race EFR7163 for top end. Sounded perfect until I did a bit more reasearch into the sprintex system and saw the issues it had with higher levels of boost. So back to square one.

I have heard so many tuners hear in Aus say go supercharger if you want to track and daily drive. Instant throttle response and with the harrop kit, can get real good power. But I keep falling for the full race. If I go just turbo, will go for the EFR6758 as it will spend 90% of its life under 5,000RPM. Very rarely do I boot it hard on the street (too afraid to attract attention, especially in my car) and only gun it on the track which isn't all that often. Think the better bottom end and awesome mid range will make me happier than loosing a tad up top. Heart says turbo, head says supercharger. What to do :iono:

This won't be happening for a very long time. At least two year before it goes forced induction. I intend to install whatever I go with first on low boost to get use to the power and not worry about building motor, clutch, fuel system. Once clutch needs replacing, will go hard and build motor, clutch, gearbox and fuel system. 350-400whp is end game. My motto is it is better to do things right and to overkill the supporting mods rather than risk and always worry. Although that is a long way away, I have many things to keep myself (and hopefully you guys) entertained with this build. Can't wait to get this started!!

Purchased some goodies from @ft86speedfactory. David was a legend. Helped me with all my queries. Ordered on Friday night and received them on Monday morning which is insane!! Best part of it all, laffy taffy, ft86speedfactory air freshener and key ring!!

Quality of all the products is ridiculous. From the header to the lug nuts and raceseng shifter and lockout, all car porn. Although I am worried the Rays nuts won't fit Enkei RPF1 17x9 +35 due the the fat lip.

Also got around to installing my raceseng reverse lockout and rondure shift knob. Man the craftsmanship on this is nuts. Couldn't believe the weight of the shift knob. I can tell you it made a world of difference. Originally the shifts were a bit notchy but now very smooth. Highly recommend it.

Installation was quite straight forward although I stuffed it up big time with the lockout cable dropping. Had it in reverse and was going well. Then when I went to put the raceseng lockout and locking pin, though it went through the cable. Put it back in neutral and there was no resistance when pulling up the lockout.

Full panicked but thank god I managed to get a thin allen key in and pull it up. Note to anyone else doing it. Once you have it installed, before putting it out of reverse, pull it up to make sure the pin is in correctly.

Light Goodies!!

Also today arrived some lighting accessories from led86.com.au. Purchased some licence plate lights with housing, valenti front fog lights and auto revitalisation rear fog/reverse light. If you like any of these stuff you can find it on their website; they have plenty of lighting accessories.

Managed to install the licence plate lights today and man do they make a world of difference. Pictures don't do them justice. Will aim to install the reverse light and my tom's red rear lights tomorrow. If all goes well, will try and install the front fog lights. Pics below.

Tom's Tail Lights & Auto Revatilisation Fog/Reverse Light

Worked on my car on Thursday and Friday night and managed to install my Tom's red tail lights and Auto Revitalisation fog lights.

Install was fairly straight forward for the fog light. Just getting the central clip off the stock fog light was a real pain. Enough of a gap between the stock muffler and bumper valance to remove and install the new fog light. No soldering involved to tail lights as it came with these clips (included a pic as hard to explain). Ended up breaking the clip on the fog light itself and not on the bumper thankfully.

One thing I would like to figure out is to turn the fog light into a fourth brake light and stay as a rear fog but without the 3 flashes as I find that annoying. Need to some research to figure that out

Tom's lights was a real simple task as was the relay. Tail lights were just 4 8mm bolts each side and for the relay had to get a small flat head screwdriver to pop the release clip up. Enjoy the photos!!

Tomei 60s and cobrasport hi flow cat install

Today I installed my Tomei 60s cat back and Cobrasport hi flow front pipe. It is quite loud at the moment but man do I love the sound. I am hoping it will quieten down a bit once it carbonises on the inside. Still on stock headers and over pipe. Will be installing my ft86speedfactory catted header next week by most likely will be removing the hi flow cat due it being loud already. Only did light revs as don't want to piss the neighbours off!!

I will be recording it when I got for a drive and upload once that is done

Ended up removing the hi flow cat as it was a bit too loud for my liking. I know it would have quiten down a bit as I used it but was a bit much. Always loud loud loud.

New set up is all stock exhaust with a Tomei 60s cat back. Much happier now. Can be civilised but when I go WOT still has the beautiful sound. Also installed my ft86speedfactory exhaust cover. Took 30min to install. I bend the cover by hand to get the fitment that I was happy with. Also installed some fog lights (pic with fog light on left is new compared with stock on the right).

My Verus Engineering Front Splitter and race upgrade arrived today at my work!! Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow... that's if I can make it fit in the 86. May have to unpackage it. Already have the Verus engineering aggressive diffuser and some Bilstein B16 but they won't be going on until my Enkei RPF1 17x9 +35 in bronze arrive. Still another 1.5 months until they arrive as they were the last set coming to Australia.
