Do you think the price of 1st Gens will drop once the 2nd Gens are released?

I've been extremely interested in getting a Toyota 86 as my second car for a while now. I'm graduating college in the Spring next year, and I'm sooo ready to sell my 2005 Ford F-150 lol. It's been a reliable truck, but it's just a bore to drive, not to mention the terrible gas milage. The 86 is pretty much everything I'm looking for in my next car: sexy styling, great handling, good gas milage, usable power that isn't overwhelming, and affordable to purchase and insure. Now, I know that the 2nd Gens are set to release in the near future, but man I just cant do that new styling, that back end especially is uuuuugly imo. Plus buying the first year of a new car generation usually comes with some problems down the line. So, to get back on topic, I wanted to see what everyones opinion is on the prices of the first gens when the new ones come out, as I will most definitely be purchasing a used first gen around the time the second gens are released. Mainly looking at 2017-2020s. Do you think the prices will fall? Stay the same as they are now? Increase? Let me know what you think! :thanks:

As long as Carmax/Vroom/Carvana pay a decent price I would not expect the prices to drop.

Depends on the used car market. If supply is still low then the prices will remain the same. The price of the first gen will be more impacted for trade ins, but dealership selling it will pretty much stay the same.

If used car prices level out then I can see first gen dropping in prices. Styling aside, the new one is better in every way than the fist gen- so the demand for first gen might not be strong in the future. Someone would def buy a used second gen rather than first.

I would set the budget for your 86 as how the prices are right now. It would not increase. If by the time you buy and prices are similar then you have saved enough. If prices drop by the time you buy, then you can use that extra money toward better tires, wheels, tint, car insurance, etc.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping for, the upgrades the 2nd gens bring to the table become more desirable, dropping the prices of the first gens. As previously stated, I'm coming from a 2005 F-150, so pretty much anything I drive is gonna feel like an upgrade lol. That's why the styling of the first gen is more desirable to me than the little hp and torque boost found in the second gen.

I think they will after the chip shortage goes away.

Welcome to our forum, bmbauccio - :)

Congratulations on almost completing your studies -

Oh, I'd suggest you just start looking around when YOU are ready, not the market. Just look for one that has the transmission you want, the color you think is pretty, one that the engine hasn't been "messed" with, and has relatively low miles.

Does my car getting the valve spring recall done considered ‘messed’ with? [emoji23] lol

Thanks! Yeah I definitely still have some waiting to do before I can commit to buy one. I go on Autotrader and other sites like it from time to time to feel out whats on the market. There's usually a handful of great examples that are relatively affordable. Fingers crossed I can get my hands on a GT Black in "Thunder Gray," I'm just in love with that color. I know they're relatively hard to find though since they were only made for one year. :iono:

:bellyroll:

The OP was talking about "Mainly looking at 2017-2020s.", so the valve recall would not apply.

As far as considering a 2013 after the valve spring recall work being "messed with", I reckon it would have survived the operation for after about 10,000 miles, it would have survived the messing with - :confused0068:

if the new ones are actually better, then the prices of the used will go down a bit. If they prove to NOT be better, and in context of tuner cars, not just regular consumer products, then the old ones might even go up more
