Why do our cars get salvaged so easily?

Just curious. Every car listing I see says that the car was salvaged due to the smallest things (something hit the bottom of the car, small fender bender, etc)

Simple, cost of repair vs value of the car in a repaired state.

if you're seeing those reasons as a car being salvaged, then the seller is not telling you the truth or they are severely downplaying the amount of damage the car had.

none of those things would be a condition that causes a salvage title, it's usually whatever threshold the insurance company set to pay out ACV of the car instead of fixing it... usually when the damage is 60% or higher of ACV of the car.

Because they crunch up easily - :(

They are designed to crumple in any impact over 5 mph. This results in expensive damage. Like Mav said though a simple fender bender will not total a car so the damage is actually greater than it appears.
You also don see the thousands of cases where the car was just fixed so it seems like there are more write offs than there really is.

i understand insurance looks at value vs cost of repair, but that would mean that they undervalue our cars or cost of repair is insanely high.

here are some examples:

1. 2016 FRS with 40k miles

"Car had sustained an indirect hit on the right side and scraped against something. Only the right passenger door assembly and right rear quarter panel were replaced in the salvage repair."

2. 2016 FRS with

"Salvage title due for a hit On front left side .with no frame damage, no airbag deployed ,airbags are good"

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/ws...902729295.html

3. 2017 86 with 12k mileage

It really doesn't take much. See the photo below? This cost almost $3,000 to repair. You can see the details including some additional photos of the damage underneath in my Owner's Journal starting in post 397

:slap: - that's for calling me a boob!

Yes, the skin on the whole damn car is a crumple zone - :(

I have 3 "crumples" on the drivers side, where I found out I didn't have the strength to lift a full trash can over the car. Yes, I know, I'm a slow learner - :sigh:

I have 4 small "crumples" on the passenger side where the door of mrs humfrz's tank got away from the older granddaughters. They now exit and enter when the car is outside of the garage.

I could push them out with my thumb if I could get my hand in there.

A PDR person will be scheduled, as soon as my fixed income will allow it.

#3 is just a shady ad, or something else is up with seller.
#2, "no frame damage" but I can screw up every panel on the car and it will still be a salvage situation.
#1, right door + right quarter panel replacement? that's a gigantic accident...
