Relocating 3rd brake light.
Has anybody deleted the 3rd brake light located on the parcel shelf and used the rear fog light located in the rear bumper as a 3rd brake light.
It looks to me that the parcel shelf brake light was a bit of an after thought. I'd prefer the cleaner look and the fog light cluster is not used in the US & Canada. I would just need to reroute the wiring to the bumper and fabricate a bulb. Or is this just a stupid idea. |
If you want to stay legal in the US the third light has to be above the tail lights. Not sure about the rules in Canada.
Or you could do this... https://i.imgur.com/r8Afhin.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Xx32drG.jpg |
Ive seen it used as a 4th brake light in addition to one at the top of the rear windshield. Like @toast posted a pic of. (Thanks!)
I moved my third brake light and upolstered my rear dash/deck to match my custom leather seats. The third brake light bothered me. IMO, it looked like the plastic thing they used to put on pizzas back in the day. |
Twins need to adhere regulations world wide for it to be sold worldwide with minimum changes. Very probably minimum height of 3rd brakelight might be regulated somewhere. Normal cars usually are higher a bit, so no problems with placement right on rear parcel shelf. Stock legged "spaceship" brakelight indeed looks like hackish afterthought, aftermarket relocated to top of window result in much cleaner looks and improves a bit rearwards visibility. Some warnings though - many with aftermarket brakelights for top of window often have issues with tape used to mount them unsticking and then rattling, and also window defroster doesn't reach that high, so there might be some fogging/frosting issues with window portion right behind relocated to top brakelight.

One of my favorite mods. Installed the $50 CDC Mustang part. Removed ET from the package shelf, fabricated some foam pieces to fill all recesses, then covered with one piece of black felt. |
@tarzan_nojane the rear shelf looks very well done. Did you use all the tape that came on the CDC part?
I have the CDC light myself, just haven't installed it yet. I was debating using a velcro solution so the light itself is removable/doesn't rip my tint off if I do decide to do that. |
I'm thinking about getting the CDC one, No vibrations or anything?
Should I install it before I get the windows tinted or is it ok to do after? |
No vibrations, before tint would be better for everyone to see it, but worse aesthetically.

This is the nicest 3rd brake light ive seen for the car, but i cant seem to find em anywhere. Are they still available somewhere? Speaking of 3rd brake lights tho, I saw some car today, i believe it was an audi with a 3rd brake light that went most of the length of the rear window, with prolly 5-6inches to spare on each side. That looked quite nice. Is there a longer/bigger version available for our cars?? |
