Kyalami

I've created this Kyalami thread for videos, stories, and BS about Kyalami.

THE ICONIC KYALAMI RACETRACK.
From it's 1960's beginnings to it's current magnificent evolution.

Feel free to post anything about Kyalami here :)

But, of course, you'll get big bonus points if it's an 86 Kyalami story :)

To kick off this thread, I'll post my Kyalami videos from a few weeks ago.

The 3 videos I’ve uploaded are my unedited Kyalami sessions, about 12-18 minutes each.
If you’ve got the bandwidth, and you’re interested, then I hope you enjoy watching them, and I'll enjoy your comments.

This was my first ever outing on Kyalami with my little 2 Lt road legal car which I love so much!!

Session 1:

This was my first time out on Kyalami ever.
(ignoring a highly illegal and very drunk outing just before midnight on 31 Dec 1970)

Kyalami was awesome!! I had so much anticipation, and I wasn’t disappointed.
I immediately felt comfortable with the track despite all the walls and barriers whispering “come to me...”
Very low grip, which needed a bit of adjusting to. But a stunning and predictable surface nevertheless.
Several blind corners – wow, the blind corners were quite a challenge.
It’s hard to tell your brain to go fast when you can’t see what’s coming...

1st timed lap was 2m22.0, best lap was 2m19.5

It was a motorcycles day, and there were very few cars (only 11). Pity.
In the second half of the video, you’ll see that I enjoyed chasing a Porsche Carrera 4.
Just after I passed him, I had some brake fade, so I decided to chill out and cool down.
Not going to say anything about my "EX" brake pad supplier here.

Session 2:

Pleasantly surprised to have one of my friends pop out of the woodwork, and accept my offer for a ride.
We did a few laps, then let my suspect brakes cool off a bit, and then gave it a short squirt again.

Best lap was 2m18.8

You’ll see an obscenely powerful white BMW M6 racecar (on full slicks) blast through between us and the Audi TT that I was passing. WOW!!

But after that power display, he took a while to pull out of view of my camera. Power helps, but it’s not everything...

Thanks @FT_86_SM_GP - it was great having you with. :)

Session 3:

A very quiet session, but on lap 2 I ended up with an awesome customised 740bhp Porsche in the distance in front, which I chased unsuccessfully.
https://www.facebook.com/pg/race1SA/...01419633227540

My best lap this session was 2m16.8

I’ll be back. For sure. It’s an awesome track, which justifies the stiff pricing and makes it worth it.
If I put my mind to it, and grow some bigger b@lls, I’ll do 2m12.

But when you get older, you need some motivation like a Michelin Cup event (hint, hint) to push the bubble.
It’s much easier to just chill and have some fun on track.

For any of my mates reading this – if you get the opportunity to do a track day on Kyalami, don’t hesitate.
It’ll cost a lot, but it’ll be worth every penny!! Go for it!! :)

Love this thread, and loved the experience being on Kyalami as a passanger with @Fish Eagle

Although this track costs 3 to 4 times more than other surrounding track days (Zwartkops/Redstar), the experience with the elevations, fast corners, heritage, and world class standards/facilities make it worth it IMO.

My goal for 2018 is to do a track day at Kyalami, either during June 2018 (During the Michelin Cup break), or December 2018.

Will do research in the interim for pricing and various open track days available,

Currently, what I am aware of is:

1) SA Biking Academy
1.1) Pricing: +- R3,000
1.2) Availability: TBA
http://www.superbikemag.co.za/trackdays/

Please feel free to share other track days that you are aware of. (Pricing and availability of dates).

Whoop-whoop!! It's that time of the year again.
I've already entered and paid for the 2018 Superbike Mag event on 16 Dec which I enjoyed so much last year.
Just got to do it again. :burnrubber: :burnrubber: :burnrubber:

I’m so jealous, cos I just can’t justify over 3k for 1 day :(

Fish Eagle 12-15-2018 10:23 AM

Hooray, Kyalami tomorrow. :happyanim:

Last year, I said it was a bucket list thing, just once.
I lied. :burnrubber::burnrubber::burnrubber:
