Transmission rattle in Neutral

2013 frs

had the clutch replaced while the engine was out, so transmission was not dropped. exedy Oem clutch.
Transmission started rattling sometimes in neutral when coming to stop and the noise goes away if i push on the shifter.

How should i about stopping the rattle.

First, I would try to simply screw down the shift knob so that it's tight.

If that wouldn't work, I'd call up my buddy @Ultramaroon for his advice.

Here, I'll ring him up for you.

He will want to know if you have any power modifications, who did the work on the engine and maybe have you tried to tighten the bellhousing bolts and the bolts that hold the transmission to the cross member. - :iono:

I hate to heap this on ol Ultramaroon, but it's time for my long Saturday nap - ZZZZZZZZZ

Simple fix. Something not bolted all the way down.
By the sounds of it I bet they ripped open the interior to get to the shifter. Zero reason why, you can get to it way easier from the bottom.

Did they replace the quill (transmission front cover)? If so, they drained and refilled fluid. Every fluid except the factory fill is a little bit thinner and allows the gearbox to make a little more noise when it's in neutral.

It makes sense that if you push on the gearshift the noise goes away. What about if you push in the clutch?

If that's not it then let's consider other stuff. Do you have the invoice?

It's gearbox rattle, most likely. My car does it too on occasion. My understanding has always been that it is normal, and just something you hear a lot more in this car due to the lack of NVH stuff.

Are you sure you don't work at a dealership?? - :D

They didnt replace the trans fluid. I'm using motul300. They didnt replace anything else other than clutch and throw out bearings. They had the engine out for the recall. So transmission wasn't even dropped. And I never had the rattle before clutch replacement.

Freaky. I've heard of times when one of the retaining clips has fallen out after TOB service. If you pull the clutch fork forward and try to twist it back and forth before the pushrod comes back out, does it feel nice and tight? It should not wiggle.

I believe i have tracked down the rattle. It's the clutch fork and slave cylinder piston, somewhere in that area. I moved the clutch fork side to side from the top of the engine and there is so much play and it makes the rattling noise. I checked friend's car and there is much less play. So, is there a bushing or loose bolt that could be causing the excess play?

i think my retaining clip has fallen just like you said, i have so much play side to side on the clutch fork.

Aha!

I have to replace my TOB this weekend. Just noticed it starting to make noise this morning. :(

How many miles do you have on your car now?

Like 56 or 58. I haven't looked since before Idaho. All bets are off because when I swapped out gearboxes, I used the one I had shipped from Cleveland. It seemed the better of the two. No idea how many miles were on it.

Plus I never expected it to last long because I'm always dancing on it. 60-ish feels about right when compared to other owners' reports.

OK, so, at that rate, I have another 5 years before I have to start worrying about it - :)
