Question About OFT tune and Boost controller

Hey guys I am new to the forums here. I've been owning an Fr-s for a year now and will soon be turbocharging it with sbd kit using the oft. However, I was wondering if I turn up the boost from the base (10 psi) to let's say 14psi, will I need a retune? I will install turbo kit in about a month from now. I asked shiv but obviously he's a busy man and all. Thanks in advance for help :)

Yes, a fourty percent increase in boost pressure will require a re-tune...

Word of caution:

The oft requires a manual boost controller and cannot use an ebcs. Someone in the Facebook group blew up his car using a mbc with an oft as it made the turbo spool quicker and it was too much torque to low in the rpms

sounds like somone...

Sounds like someone is blowing smoke. There is nothing about a manual boost controller that will cause a turbo to spool quicker than any other type of boost controller.

It can cause it to overboost though...

That is possible. I was told they could ramp the boost in with a ebcs so you weren't making too much power to low in the revs.

yes

You can limit boost with an ebcs, but it isn't likely to be building too much boost too early unless you're using a tiny turbo. Typically they're limiting boost by gear but that's in the upper rpms in lower gears like 1 and 2.

You're not likely to be making too much boost in the lower rpms with most setups.

p.s. also remember that an ebcs (or any boost controller for that matter), can only limit boost to the spring pressure or raise it. I'm not aware of any that can lower it below waste gate spring pressure.

The kit uses a 20g turbo, so it isn't that big. But the tuner could have been just trying to shit on oft and sell a tune.

You're definitely correct about the spring pressure. If you were to try to run a lower pressure with a lower psi than spring is good for, it would be the same as not having the boost controller.

So am i safe to use a Manual or electronic boost controller with oft?

myioz86 06-12-2017 01:41 AM

Yes you are safe with a mbc . i am using one with shiv,s tune 13psi flexfuel and mbc on there 20g turbo 8psi at 3500rmp 12psi at 4500

There's nothing stopping you from using an EBCS.

You absolutely can use an ebcs with OFT, you just can't control it with OFT. It basically becomes a manual boost controller with an electronic knob or a circuit that you build or have built.

At least if you do it that way, if OFT develops the ability to program for an EBCS or you switch to ECUTEK, you don't have to worry about replacing hardware.

Yes, a manual boost controller can spool faster, spring and ball type make a significant difference if used on a single port internal waste gate. Waste gates are not an on off device, they creep open which slows the response. The ball and spring keeps boost pressure away until it blows open and lets the boost hit the gate. This makes the gate closer to off on.
