Official 2017 MY CHANGES (Full Document) and Backwards Compatibility Discussion

Today the full document outlining every single change to the 2017 BRZ was leaked. I'm currently reading through the PDF and there are a LOT of small changes, ranging from a new ALUMINUM intake manifold, to a revised fuel pump, to a different intake tract, etc...

I think the first question that a lot of us are going to ask is: Which of these parts can easily be fitted to earlier vehicles with or without supporting modifications to other areas. Don't know if this is the right place to put this, but I wanted to start a thread where we could hopefully begin to collect this information so that people could have a one-stop-shop when it comes to discussing backwards compatibility for the new parts.

Link to the document is here (grab it before it vanishes, lol): https://dropfile.to/5mKfPTa

Torque dip confirmed!

For as many changes they did to the engine, those are some pretty darn minuscule improvements to the power band... They would have achieved much better results by going with a multi-stage intake like the GR86 used. Well, at least the intake is painted red (which is silly but something I was hoping for, haha!) Also, it's interesting that all of these changes really are only on the manual transmission model after all.

I think most of the changes were to improve reliability and efficiency more than to try to extract raw power. Most of the power increase is probably a byproduct of the changes, rather than an end goal.

Interesting document. Not sure it would have been worth waiting for if you were on the fence for a 2016 or 2017. If I hadn't bought this year, I'd probably buy a cheaper 16' once the 17's are at dealerships

The series yellow gets FRS seats.

Ehhh. There are a LOT of tweaks that will likely make the 2017 a better car. Lots of these tweaks are to improve reliability. Then there are bigger changes like a new final drive ratio that are hard to ignore.

Having said that, the instrument cluster is still ugly AF.

I think a lot of people underestimate how a lot of little improvements add up and make for a greater experience as a whole.

Agreed. A lot of people are going to look at this and be disappointed by the lack of "new" features. Personally, I'm quite pleased with all of the tweaks. Anyone buying a 2017 should feel much more confident that some of the issues from the "first generation" have hopefully be properly resolved with this refresh.

Holy marketing hype Batman!
The document is very obviously written as speaking points for the sales force more than as a technical update. Wonder how many sales men will be able to intelligently talk about the changes even with it though.

Motor will probably be more reliable for Forced Induction, I can see people buying 17 motors for swaps once they blow their old fa20s.

Im sold, im trading in my Series blue for the Series yellow :D

Brayden_23 06-27-2016 03:18 PM

Really curious if it will still have the crickets

BFIFE22 06-27-2016 03:19 PM

It's pretty funny how the car basically comes loaded with OEM JPM Coachworks parts now

Interested to see if the new manifold will be backwards compatible, and how the car drives with the new final drive. (Also found it funny that they felt the need to beef up the transmission to deal with the whopping 5hp increase the car has)
