Simplifying the differences in engines

Hi! I'm new to the forums. This is my first post.

I was donated a 2017 BRZ with a rod through the block.

I'm looking to replace the motor with a stock motor, but like everyone else, looking for the lowest cost at the highest reward.

I don't know about about the FRS/BRZ/86 chassis, but I've spent a lot of time teaching racing in them, and really enjoy them. So I'm hoping to get this one back to stock.

My questions are:

1. What are the differences in engines between the FRS - BRZ - 86?

2. Do things change on the motors from 2012 to 2020? (read: Should I be looking for the same year and model of motor for my BRZ?)

When I accepted the donation my approximation for a used motor cost was well below what I they actually sell for used. It's more expensive then I'd assumed. It's still a great deal for me, and helping teach performance driving, but I need to find the right route for my project to be fruitful.

Perhaps there is some search terms I should be using, or posts I might've missed combing the forums.

Thanks for your time!

I believe all 2017+ are compatible with each other, or at least eBay and other parts websites suggest so. I think there were sensor changes 2013-2016 that make the earlier engines not directly compatible. If your components other than the window in the block are complete, you could purchase the engine I linked below and use your existing engine's components to make it whole (double check for yourself and/or your engine builder/shop). If you do not have the practical experience or wrench time to be removing the engine and swapping over the components yourself, I would highly advise a direct longblock replacement instead.

there was a major engine update in 2016. anything '16-20 will be a direct swap. '13-15 is going to be more difficult due to the changes made, but i believe there are a few documented swaps between the years that took a lot of extra work.

Just to make a correction, I believe the engine update came in 2017, not 2016. Just using a random link, but they're all the same.

There are minor updates 13-15. Changes in the rocker pivots and rockers, I think the valve stem length was changed in 15'. 15's and up also have a different engine harness and coil packs to combat failures in the early model.

There are more changes, just can't think of them off the top of my head.

Unfortunately I can’t find it, but there is a pdf from Subaru that outlines in detail every change for the 2017 update. I had it once but can’t find it. Someone more savvy then me might be able to find it and post. It is likely already in a thread somewhere.

this is the perfect opportunity to swap in an EJ207

8200rpm bone stock, turbocharged and easily tunable.

Lol Yeah the cost to reward ratio would be horrible.

really? people are putting LS engines in, K24s, etc. This would probably bolt up. Wiring would be minimal. We already do turbo plumbing on these so no difference.

The cost of a supercharger kit is like $4000 USD, plus a few other items. A good older JDM EJ207 is a couple grand, and then some plumbing. Probably do it cheaper than a SC kit. And at the end of the day you have a STi engine, built for big boost and 8k+ rpm
