WTF is up with spam group texts and facetimes?
<rant>
In the past two weeks I have been getting a ton of GROUP spam texts and GROUP spam facetimes on my work phone... (Note: this phone is only used for work purposes, no personal browsing, etc and I have had the number for about 3 years) Possibly more annoying than the spam itself are the CLUELESS other group members that respond to EVERYONE in the group with STOP, "who are you", and various profanities...:mad0259: Is this a common occurrence now??? As it stands, I no longer answer the phone unless caller ID shows someone I know. </rant> |
I feel your pain. I get those constantly and have my phone set to not ring on numbers I don't have as contacts, even though it is a work phone and my number is given out all the time to customers. I figure if it is important they will leave a voicemail or email me. The group text thing drives me the most crazy with all the dummies who respond. I usually mute the conversation until people stop replying and then delete it later.

The only ones that I get are the weekly "The Internal Revenue Service has put out a warrant for your arrest. If you do not contact us immediately the RCMP will be at your door. They are on their way respond now"
Well I am not sure that the Canada Revenue Agency would like to be called the IRS and it is costing me a fortune in coffee and doughnuts to be prepared for the Mounties visit that never happens. |
I also get the robot voice message about arrest warrants.
Lately it's been fake local area code numbers calling me over dead air. Answered one or two and have had multiple voice messages of dead for 30-60 seconds. |
Every time I drive up along Hwy 112 past Port Angeles I get three text messages from Rogers Wireless Services telling me I should really, really sign up with them.
Let's be realistic here. Why in the world not? Doesn't everybody? They're up in Victoria BC and send texts to any phone they get a new ping from. Buggerem. Millennial hand and shrimp! |

They don't leave a message? Blocked. I get maybe 5-6 spam calls a year. I recommend everyone do the same. Unless of course you are expecting a call from a number you wont recognize. |
From back in the day when I would actually answer phone calls from numbers I didn't know.
"Hello, we're calling to inform you that the warranty on your 2003 Nissan Sentra is about to expire and needs to be renewed immediately." "I haven't owned that car in years." "Oh, what do you drive now?" (Shouldn't have answered) "2008 WRX." "The warranty on that is about to expire and needs to be renewed immediately, too." "Good effort." *hang up phone. Proceed to get 8 spam calls a day for the next two weeks before looking up how to block a number* |
For spam texts:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/article...essages#report In short, copy the spam text and send it to the number 7726 (SPAM). After getting a confirmation, send the phone number from which the spam number came from. Normally after doing this I message them back saying I reported their number to the FTC. Sometimes those messages get read by humans, especially the political ones. |
2 days ago, I got 11 spam calls & 4 spam txt. THAT was annoying. I haven't had that many in a while.

This is your final notice. (wish it was) We have mailed you several reminders. (not) Would like to extend your warrantee on what ever you are driving.
My favorite was when the number calling was mine. I had to answer to see why i was calling myself. They Wanted to offer me a no interest credit card. They said my payment history made me eligible. I asked if i could really get their card. They assured me i could. I explained that the judge told me that i cold not get a credit card. Click. I am pretty sure that after six months the interest rate would have gone to 22%. |
i don't bother blocking them anymore. every call is a different number, so eventually, i'm going to end up blocking a number i need for work...
many of the car warranty one's have started stipulating that your car must be at least a 2008 or newer. makes it easy to tell them that i have a 2002. they really haven't called me since. |
