Been a big fan of the twins since they were originally released and own a BRZ myself. Was pretty set on the GR and even have a reservation placed at a dealership.

However, business has been far better than expected and if this continues then that may open the doors to other options. Seeing as how the Supra will be released in a manual transmission in 6 months, I’ve been considering it more and more.

I know a lot about the twins but I don’t know a ton about the Supra. I will research of course, but I wanted to come here first and ask the people who’s taste is most like mine - which one would you rather have if either one could be given to you? And why?

They are two entirely different cars IMO. Supra is a track focused car that can do some road driving. The 86/brz are road driving cars that can do some track work. I’m not saying one can’t work on the other. Plus you have to be OK with owning a BMW meaning if you plan on keeping it a long time the cost that comes with it. It’s not just the cost of the car upfront but the continuing maintenance cost which is way way more with those cars. Also the manual Supra has been coming the next six months for the last two to three years;) So who knows? Personally taking all cost out of the picture and they did offer a manual. It would be a hard choice for me I don’t track cars just back road fun. Probably still the 86 as I would take the better weight (500+lbs more with the 3.0, 2.0 isn’t a consideration for me) , handling, and weight distribution of the 86/brz. This is a momentum vs power senario.

This thread is worth reading from someone who has owned a first gen and a Supra. I guess the 2nd gen is even better and maybe the Supra is now more engaging being a manual.

From what I gather the Supra is more a GT car, faster, heavier but more refined. BRZ is lighter, raw and more engaging, but slower.

Neither. Would have a Porsche and a Ferrari in the stable.

GRZ, no question.

Take this from a long time BMW owner, BMW manuals suck. The shifter has long throws, it's rubbery and numb with almost no feedback. The clutch pedal is way too long (German tradition) and the grab point is way too high. The pedal arm is made of plastic, which makes it too flexible and inaccurate feeling. And then there's the damn clutch delay valve that screws up your timing, kills the little feedback there used to be, and teaches you terrible clutching habits.

I've had 4 manual BMWs before the BRZ, and a manual Audi before that. I still have one BMW and an older Benz. I love my German cars and as far as I can tell they'll be my overall go to in the future too, but a great clutch/shifter setup is something I've yet to see in a German car. Even Porsches don't do it right, their clutch is too high/long and the cable shifters they use are better than Audi’s but not as good as the BRZ.

The BRZ is the best manual setup out of all my cars I've ever had, even better (stock!) than my BMW 335i, which had the CDV removed, a completely custom machined all-metal shift rod/linkage, and an adjustable steel clutch pedal.

Also, can anyone (OP?) point to a definitive source saying manual Supra is coming? Makes total sense but I’ve seen nothing concrete. Looks like 22 MY will see minor changes only. So if a manual is a critical requirement, your choice is easy.

I haven’t heard much at all that makes me desire a Supra. GR86/BRZ, seems like the praises won’t stop. So if money were no obstacle and I was set on one or the other, I’d go GR86 and do the 8000+ RPM 275hp all motor build of my dreams :)

I would get a new 86 and a 2012 Cayman R.

Oh really? In what way?

A BMW M2 would be my choice if I wanted a manual Zupra badly. Really you would have to drive them both. Still no official word of a manual 3.0 Supra so there is that too. Just rumors...like a turbo 86 in 2020..

These questions always open the possibilities when more money is on the table to used cars like for the price of a new Supra someone could get two used vehicles or a new GR86 and a used C6 or Cayman or luxury daily, or someone coukd buy two GR86s: one to daily and one for the track.

But if I was just going to review the two, the Supra is a far better daily driver. It is more premium or luxurious. The adaptive suspension, active diff, much smoother and more powerful and high power potential will all make it a far better car. The GR86 will be lighter and more engaging to drive, but louder, noisier and more harsh like a track car. The NA engine will require you to rev it out. You can add forced induction and get it to be quicker, but the transmission and engine will cap the power around what the Supra makes from the factory without Supra $$$ investing in a built block and transmission swap, so if you want big power then just get the Supra. The Supra will be a more mature car that you will rarely see compared to the 86 that will be in every parking lot and driving by teenagers and people in their 20’s much more. In short, this is closer to asking if you should buy a Civic Si or a BMW M2. Some people will say that regardless of the fact that the Supra is a better car on paper and faster and more tune-able, the GR86 is a better driver’s car because of the light weight, communicative chassis and more direct steering, and the NA engine is more engaging around town.

Personally, I would take them both on test drives. You will know right away which one suits you. If you choose the GR86, just consider its tuning limits if you think you may want more power.

0 interest in a Supra or even the new Z. They're heavier GT cars. Not more track focused cars. More isolation from the driving experience. The only car at a higher price point that could tempt me out of the twins is the new Lotus Emira. There are a ton of cars that appeal to car people. There are not a ton of cars that appeal to drivers. This is one of them because it's so light, focused, pure and free from gimmicks.

Gr86, no contest. I like shifting and lighter cars
