College Budget Build

1 Attachment(s)
Quick Intro, Sophomore at CSUF. Money for the FRS comes from my Marketing Coordinator job for Re/Max. My first car build was a 1992 Prelude and was recently stolen 6 months ago; which allowed me to upgrade. My goal is to make around 200 at the wheels.

Goals:
1. Keep it a 10/10's car
2. 4th gear should actually pull...
3. Reliability same or better
4. Daily Driver friendly
5. Be different

New Setup
Attachment 136560
Old Setup

Exterior Mods:
Eibach Pro-kit (Local deal): $175
Modellista front lip $250
STI Side Skirts $200
Rear Diffuser and Aprons: Christmas Present
White Wrap(Friends shop): $50
Konig 17x8 Runaways (Local Deal): $200
Total: $675

Engine and Transmission Mods:
Open Flash Tablet $425
TRD Intake $200
Milltek Exhaust $300
J2 Front pipe $100
Mtec Shift Springs $40
Weir Performance 4.56 Final Drive $1000 with install
Total: $2065

Impressions of what I did so far 5/6/16:
Honestly I think I'm done. E85 with a 4.56 Final drive is amazing, you honestly feel a pull through all the gears up until 6th. 0-60 time on a good 70 degree night is about 5.8-6 seconds. On the highway 3rd gear pulls up to 77 now instead of 83, but my 4th gear feels like the new 3rd gear if that makes sense. All the gears seem to have a purpose now 1-2nd are torque monsters, 3rd gear gets you to freeway speeds, 4th gear is when you want to pass aggressively, 5th gear is passing passively, 6th gear is overdrive. Shifting is refined with the mtec shift springs. My exhaust note is now perfect, no drone until you go full throttle. The TRD Intake really improved throttle response and felt like it added a few horses in the low-mid range. The ride is comfortable with pro kits. The best part? Nothing I did harmed my cars reliability.

Awesome tools I used creating this build:
Berk Front Pipe Dyno 5HP and 5TQ all Across the power band -

K&N Filter dyno increase of 2.5-5Hp from 4.5k to redline

OFT vs Stock Dyno increase of 16hp in the dip and increase of HP from 5.5k to redline http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1437316

I'm interested to see what you do, budget builds can be tough to get much out of.

Best of luck to you and keep us posted

Nice Bud, college student here as well. If you have experience in marketing you should research affiliate marketing as an additional source of income, it's what is paying for my build :)

How do they know which sales are based off your marketing?

Eyeing out a used catless front pipe for the FRS, 2015's aesthetically already have nice exhaust tips, I'm looking for no drone, good look, as well as increased sound at WOT, Dyno Proven of 5HP and 5TQ and shown partially cut the torque dip.

OFT/OFH.
Used, ~$800
~25-30whp conservatively.

E85
$0 without a flex fuel kit
~20whp

Yup, I've seen that combo trust me I was drooling to find a used OFT/OFH Combo for that price but I've been on the forums for 1 year still yet to find it for that price. My College budget Limit is $1200 on this car, I already spent $485 on the exterior leaving me with $715. As much as I'd like to continue modding this car, after college I plan on moving on with my career first. You can say this $1200 is my last hoorah until I'm a settled businessman haha.

E85 on a stock FRS shows to make gains of 20hp and 17 torque conservatively speaking based on http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52326
$400/20hp= $20/hp

Based on this the header adds another 10-15hp and completely eliminates the dip. $800/15hp = $36.6/hp
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1462311

As my personal preference I'd rather deal with a catless front pipe every now and then for a smog check then the header(being the main cat). E85 is showing to be the best bang for your buck, as long as one takes the necessary early oil changes. E85 along with a catless front pipe and K&N filter should be able to put one in the 185-190hp range conservatively speaking. Hopefully putting the car around the 0-60 mark of 6-6.5 seconds.

Is that fast enough for me? Hell yeah it is. This car is a commuters dream, having fun while not breaking the speed limit and I don't plan on changing the driver characteristics of this car, only improving them. Want to pass someone? Drop it to third gear and hear it sing, who needs torque dip when your already at 5k? Not all cars allow one to have that much engagement on the freeway. Don't get me wrong headers do add a lot to this car but they change the car's characteristics in a way that I believe wasn't how the car was supposed to be (Also I'm on a budget). Even running 91 with a catless front pipe and k&n filter with 91 tune one should feel a difference.

E85 has shown to decrease mpg by 25% according to http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=650005
With gas prices and ethanol margin being 20% the cons are 5% loss per tank. I'm sure there are a lot more variables including the more recent oil changes due to E85, but this is what's in my college budget and hope to see an improvement in my daily driving antics!

OFT (E85) + Front Pipe + K&N Filter conservatively = +23hp
400+160+45= 605/23hp = $26.03/HP
OFT+OFH= $995/30hp = $33.16/hp

Installed J2 FrontPipe and OFT Stage 1
Review - Front pipe, power increased across the band vey minor but still noticeable. Exhaust note is practically the same but louder.

OFT, Torque dip is a lot smaller, can now pull in 4th gear, acceleration is increased all across the band, No anemic feeling when 1 gear too high, practically imagine your 4th gear still being your stock third gear pull feeling.
