Official MTB Thread

Was pretty surprised that I couldn't find one of these already in existence on here, especially giving the number of posts I've seen from people who ride. Assuming of course that I'm not an idiot and just missing it, I figured I'd start one.

I'll kick it off:

I used to ride a decent amount back when I lived in AZ, borrowing my brother's Gary Fisher Piranha or his FS Giant (can't remember the model), but hadn't done any since moving to Chicago 3 years ago. Earlier this year I decided I wanted to get back into riding, mainly XC and single track, and ended up buying a 2016 Trek X-Caliber 8 that was on a pretty good closeout deal. It sat in my apartment for a good 3 months because various of reasons (read: me being either busy or lazy), before my friend finally guilted me into coming riding this past weekend.

Despite the ride being over twice as long as I expected (I was told it would be 10mi, it ended up being 23.5mi lol) and the temperature being 32-40 degrees (I also under-dressed because of the ride distance I was told lol), I was very happy with the bike and glad I go it out before winter came in full force. The seat and pedals definitely need to be upgraded (already bought some VP Vice pedals, just need to install them), but otherwise it feels like a great 29er for the money.

Also picked up a Slambert hitch recently, but still need to find a decent rack. Any suggestions or feedback on a 1-2 bike hitch mount rack would be appreciated!

A ton of my friends ride, and are constantly trying to get me to buy a bike. But, I am a runner. My doc says eventually my knees are going to hate me (more than they do now) for running on pavement. And that I (should) will get a bike at that point. My buddy has a 29er with a 4 inch front tire front, front suspension, and rigid rear.
He goes on and on about his fancy hubs. "They give you instant peddle responsiveness" and so on...

He rides downhill with a group of guys that are very competitive. I have been hesitant to go with them as they ride fast. I have seen the damage he has sustained form crashing.

I am moving out of the forest and to a city, def going to get a bike next year when I do...

I've been trying to get back into the groove for the last few months. Used to get at least one decent ride and a couple of quick ones after work every couple weeks, lately I'm lucky if I get one short ride a month. Currently ride a Blur ltc and a gt peace 9r ss.
