Joakim3's SAAB restora-build

As some of you know I was in the market for picking up a black BRZ limited late last year and then this happened

Got into a fight with a concrete curb on the way back from school, and damn near ripped the front end clean off (zip ties do wonders). A lot of tears and a two months hunting for a replacement bumper/headlight assembly... all my saved BRZ down payment pennies and ambitions went out the window

Come 2016.. new mindset, new me etc.. etc.. etc.. While I will get a BRZ at some point in the future... I've decided in the meantime, why not do a restore-build on old bessy.

11 years young, 167k on the odometer & still pulls like a freight train on the highway.... but man could she use some good old loving right about now.

So you guys (and gals) are more then welcome to follow our little saab story and hope to see you on the other side!! :party0030:

Should have just left the damage (looks like it still drove fine) and continued to save for a BRZ. Just my $0.02

It was drivable in the sense that I could have drove it back to my house 5 miles away. It completely ripped the lower engine/radiator cover off, all the washer fluid hoses, broke the headlight housing and twisted the lower subframe

That and other outside finical issues arouse

The cars long been paid off, I just got my foot on solid ground again. Might as well make the most of what I got.

I would just get the saab into a sellable state and use that money and the money you have saved up to buy a used '15. Unless you're really set on buying new.

I'm going into the navy so don't feel like paying for a car that I can't even enjoy on a day to day bases (I'll be on a ship duty)

I'll probably grab one when/if I get stationed on a physical base

NARFALICIOUS 01-10-2016 05:27 PM

How much was the damage?

NahumCC 01-10-2016 06:01 PM

Ouch. That's one of the few years the 9-5 Aero looked great. Manual or Auto? Any special goods from Genuine Saab like there 3 inch downpipe or a tune from maptun, nordic, or from the self tuning trionic suites.

I had a stage 3 viggen clone.

Good luck in the Navy.

Over the course of 3 months to get into a drivable-not have a cop pull me over every second state.... Somewhere in the ball park of ~2k, once you include labor & all the parts

I still haven't gotten around to painting the new front bumper which is another 300$ lol

Totally agree... the +06's looked sooooooo vial compared to the 04-05's. That being said... The body parts for them are just impossible to find as ~3400 were produced between the two years -.-

Auto slush box, it's currently having transmission issues :bonk:

Special Saab goodies are in the pipe line, I just bought a quad tips (NONE rice) for a custom rear muffler delete. I'm still debating on weather or not to tune it due to the Autobox, but If I do so I'll probably get to 300 whp and call it a day haha

Nice!!! Must have bee a hoot to drive... My pops owns a genuine 9-3 Viggen, 00' 4-Door Black, torque steer for days haha

First order of business

Bought myself a 15" x 47" custom honeycomb grill mesh (I hateee the OEM grill inserts), as well as carbon fiber styled front & rear emblems :D

DustinS 01-11-2016 12:21 PM

Last place I expected to see a Saab build haha. There are quite a few Saab/Twin owners. My Self being one (I also used to work for GenuineSaab and I am still really good friends with Nick)

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...61654552_o.jpg

Good Luck on the rebuild and on the saving for the BRZ!

NahumCC 01-11-2016 12:23 PM

Dustin what's going on!!!!!! You have got to get Nick working on this platform. I ask him occasionally because the quality of all the custom parts you guys made were amazing.

Why didn't you file it with your insurance?

Didn't feel like the insurance rapping me up the ass...

Second... by all technical purposes, I was speeding when I crashed, so that wouldn't have helped when I would have to explain how it happened lol

Good or Bad thing? lol :bellyroll:

NahumCC 01-21-2016 10:00 PM

Nothing wrong. Just so used to the viggen style corner rounded exhaust of the Remus exhaust.

So I guess I need to know are you going for a center exit setup routing the exhaust around the sides of the rear tire well?

I never had a 9-5 so I don't know what is tucked under there. If it's similar to the og9-3 then anything will work once you trim the valance.

They sort of look like C5 Vette style tips.

Haha, yeah the Viggen's looks good with dual circle tips

It's going to look very similar to the JT dual setup (just with another pair of tips on the inside of the outer two). Each tip is about ~90% the size of the JT ones (120x86mm) tips

it's almost identical to the og9-3 (My dad has a Viggen as well), It's nothing but open air (ill be chucking the muffler out as well since thats succumbed to rusting after ~12 years lol)

The tips are designed for the current Golf R/AMG bumpers. The 9-5's are a couple inches wider than the ng9-3 so the oval's setups look better on them (imho)

NahumCC 01-21-2016 11:14 PM

That'll look good and will be unique with that 04-05 Aero fascia up front.

Now we've gone and done it though. The Saab guys are hijacking (ironic to say for a company that also makes aircraft [even though its a separate legal entity]) a board and filling it full of Swedish meatball awesomeness.

Yeah I've looked and to my knowledge I'll be the only person rocking a quad tipped 04-05' Saab 9-5 aero, should be fun at future SoC/car meets

Apart from the custom grill, Turbo X lip, rims and antenna... the pipes are the only other cosmetic things I'm goning to change. I just wanted to as "subtle" amounts of aggression to it lol :bellyroll:

Lmaoo there's always room for a Saab story

Joakim3 01-25-2016 11:19 PM

How I feel when new parts come in (sorry.... but rotted out rubber shark fin antennas are not sexy)

Joakim3 02-08-2016 11:51 AM

So finally got around to install some of my pars (I'll take pics later today)

Side note: Any one who even remotely follows Saab builds will know of MattD's former matte black 9-5 aero (pictured below)

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5349/8...6b215170_b.jpg

Had the luxury of grabbing his last remaining custom lip (pictured on his former car above), as unlike the FRS's my generation of 9-5 is notorious for scrapping or getting their bumpers ripped off from sitting so low

NahumCC 02-08-2016 12:20 PM

MattD's car was a ridiculous machine. I got a ride in it during the Detroit SOC.

Hell yes, I followed the build from way early back!!

Must have been an epic ride. It sucks though as unlike mine, his was a manual so I can't go too crazy with the power route.

Oh... I also bought prancing moose stickers :D

Joakim3 02-15-2016 06:49 PM

So some pics of yesterdays car meet. The S60R was with us for the initial meet, while the Z06 tagged along to create some extra mayhem on our I-70 run up to northern MD

My current Geisha :brokenheart:
http://i.imgur.com/46DOVrT.jpg

Mutual friends ~450whp Z06 (straight piped and sounded utterly deranged). The 08' V6 Aero next to it was also de-catted and unmuffled... Lets just say those two caused quite the commotion through Old Ellicott City
http://i.imgur.com/yuCqZ8d.jpg

Mutual friends polestar blue S60R (owned by a state trooper to boot)
http://i.imgur.com/HOBpC2s.jpg

The last of us after everything was said and done, decided to do a dirty photo shoot at Lake Centennial.

Joakim3 03-18-2016 11:49 AM

So I got around to installing a custom lip (1 of ~70 made worldwide) and bought the drivers side grill and re-installed headlight washer caps

New tranny is going in on Sat/Sunday and then I can finally start on restoring the body

(yes thats stock ride height lol)

I ugh "function" tested the lip on the highway and it is indeed functional and reduces nose lift ;) lol
