White Mountain/Kancamagus Run

It's been briefly tossed about in this forum and on the Facebook group, but I'm itching to get out and drive again soon! Who's interested in doing a driving day trip to the NH White Mountains and the Kancamagus Highway, maybe even as soon as this weekend?

I'll start the discussion here so we don't drive insane those who are subscribed to the last-minute drives thread.

Chewie4299 06-26-2012 11:49 PM

I. Want. My. Car.

Would SO go.

Jidonsu 06-27-2012 12:02 AM

I can't this weekend, but I'd totally go for it another weekend. We can caravan up from points south.

M-17 06-27-2012 12:37 AM

I actually have a clear schedule this weekend and would go, but I'm going to try to get a BRZ this Saturday.

No restrictions for me on day. We could do something on Sunday.

WRXGuy1 06-27-2012 10:58 AM

Looking at the weather for that area they are saying Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid-80's, partly cloudy, and only a 10% chance of rain. So the weather looks great for this weekend.

I am only free on Saturday unfortunately, I have an early 4th of July BBQ on Sunday.

Sony 06-27-2012 02:44 PM

I'm working Sunday and Saturday I am spending with the girlfriend most likely.

Turbowned 06-27-2012 05:32 PM

MassTuning puts together a Kanc cruise every so often. Maybe you guys can hook up with one of their cruises?

I have family visiting this weekend, so I'll have to pass. Have fun!

MannyO 06-28-2012 11:07 AM

As much as I'd like to go, I'm working Saturday and have a party to go to on Sunday.

M-17 06-28-2012 11:19 AM

I'm out as well.

Trying to get my new car, go to beer fest, go to Euro 2012 Party, and another grad party.

If I end up picking up my car this next upcoming week I'm taking the day off to drive around and go somewhere (most likely the beach).

WRXGuy1 06-28-2012 10:04 PM

So is this a no go? Perhaps we all go on the western MA/VT drive the weekend after.

I now have my car! :w00t:

Still in break-in mode but I'm so in. Gotta put some miles on.

NRGBalanced 06-29-2012 02:13 AM

I'm still interested for Saturday. Chewie, it's not too far for you?

Chewie4299 06-29-2012 08:54 AM

4.5 hours there and 4.5 hours back.... hmm I hadnt really checked.

The round trip would knock out half the break in.

Hmm...let me think that over. 204 miles each way on I91...and I haven't purchased a radar detector yet...and my car is red...though it has dealer plates at the moment

How far would others be travelling?

My intention wasn't to start up a competing thread

Though I can't join you guys on Saturday, I hope you still do the White Mountain/Kancamagus run. After I saw this thread, I considered moving the drive I was planning to a later date, but my weekends are booked from now until August (Sunday 7/8 is the only date I had open).

Chewie, I'm probably going to make it if somebody will post a meeting location (how about LL Bean in North Conway?).

I'm coming from around Augusta, ME. 102 miles to North Conway for me if I take the more direct route, but I think I'd take a longer / more fun route (~125 miles) through Newry and either down past Mt. Washington or come down 113 (one of the most fun roads in Maine).

Best Buy has the Passport 9500 xi

Love mine!

Chewie4299 06-29-2012 12:17 PM

249 miles to north Conway for me. I'd be passing through Lowell, MA on the way.

Not entirely certain I'll be able to enjoy myself... though my frame of reference for my tolerance of long road trips is based around the jeep wrangler I just traded.... might be perfectly fine. I was able to do a wallingford, ct to Providence to Hartford to providence back to wallingford trip with my evo without too much trouble years ago.

143 miles up Rt 4/16 for me. It's a long run (though not as long as Chewie's  ).

What about 1 at the LL Bean in N. Conway? I'd like to run by a Best Buy to pick up a couple FRS radios. Does anyone else have those radios?

Headcount?

mpicher 06-29-2012 10:19 PM

Works for me. I've got a FRS radio too... (naming coincidence? :-) )

NRGBalanced 06-30-2012 12:13 AM

Summary:

Saturday, June 30 1 PM

Meet at:
L.L. Bean‎
1390 White Mountain Highway
Conway, New Hampshire 03860

We will meet there at 1 PM. I'm going to come up 128/95 to Rt 16 (with a detour in Danvers to pick up some radios) if anyone wants to meet up with me on the way.
We plan to cross from Conway to Lincoln (and maybe back?). We could get something to eat at either end depending on hunger.

So far, it looks like we have:

mpicher coming from Augusta, ME (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...649#post286649)
? Chewie4299 coming from Wallingford, CT (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=19)

Any other takers?

WRXGuy1 06-30-2012 12:17 AM

Glad this is still going on, I'm down! Cya guys there!

Chewie4299 06-30-2012 01:17 AM

Something came up and I can't make it tomorrow.

But I did get a chance to go on a spontaneous 150 mile drive today in which I literally hit just about everything from stop n go traffic through heavy roadwork and a gravel back road. Don't worry, I pulled a k-turn before actually driving onto the gravel... looked like it would have been fun in the jeep though. Basically decided I can deal with a 400 mile round trip here or there in this car. So much less tiring than the jeep. I'll try hard to be in for the next one.

I found an amazing 10 mile stretch of road not far from home that I think I'll be visiting again. Felt really guilty enjoying myself on it as the speed limit through the whole thing was 25. This guy on a Harley and I both rode it in both directions.

The Toyobaru just laughs at speed limits. 55 feels perfectly safe and controlled in a 25. Not that I actually did that or anything...

I know there are a couple other Maineiacs on the list. I'm planning on heading out of Augusta around 10 am for this route: http://goo.gl/maps/jaq5 This is one of my favorite rides just getting to North Conway :-)

If there's anybody from Southern that wants to go I could take a more southerly swing and Meet up or from North meetup along Route 2 in Newry area.

BTW, getting radios that support private codes is a good idea (most of them do). You might also want to get GMRS radios (which are backwards compatible with FRS).

GMRS requires a license to operate, but you can still buy a radio without it and leave it in FRS mode until you get licensed.

I have a couple old FRS radios, but I'm going to pick up a GMRS model this week (I applied for the FCC license this morning).

Weather looks good for you guys. I hope to join in for a drive up there at some point.

GMRS requires a license to operate, but you can still buy a radio without it, leave it in FRS mode (lower power), and get the license later.

Good idea! I decided to pick up this pair (hooray for holiday gift cards :happyanim:):

I didn't realize you could operate GMRS with a license and just the handset, I thought you had to have a base station or something. Cool!

mpicher 06-30-2012 10:36 AM

Headset = good idea for driving too...

WRXGuy1 06-30-2012 11:16 PM

I had a great time, lots of fun winding roads (although lots of slow motorcycles). Hope to do it again!

NRGBalanced 07-01-2012 01:52 AM

Had an awesome time. mpicher said it all in the last-minute drives thread. I will leave earlier next time :D

I also had a relaxing drive back, using cruise control for the first time. The car holds so straight at 70+ mph. I passed a car full of guys, and one of them stuck a thumbs-up out the window as I passed . I just waved.

I'm in NH, but have failed to make it to any meetups as I have been busy every weekend. I thought teachers were supposed to be free all summer ;).
