I Feel Pretty Stupid lol

So when I decided to get a BRZ, I knew the radio was not anything special, and to some sounded like crap. I was more concerned with how the car drove, how I fit in the car (I'm 6'2"), so when I test drove it and it passed these two criteria, I purchased my 2013 a couple weeks ago happily.

On the drive home, I plugged my iPod in to listen to some music, and the radio sounded tinny. Figured it was not great with the highway noise, and I'd adjust the EQ settings when I got home. Arrived home, and was appalled at the sound quality, thinking "I knew it's wasn't gonna be great, but didn't think it was gonna be this bad", and decided not to really listen to music in it as this is my first manual car and it would be a distraction.

Fast forward to today and I play music again, and think something has to be wrong with my radio, as people on this forum talk about how the bass rattles the interior, and no matter how much I adjust the eq settings I can barely get any bass. I open the door and put my ear up to the door speaker: nothing.

The fuse to the amp in the trunk was blown this whole time I've had the car and it took me almost 3 weeks to notice lol

Now the radio sounds decent and I'm even happier with the car than I was before

Do you know why it blew?

He put this on repeat:

Not sure, besides the answer from above lol. The entire sound system is still stock from the previous owner, if this replacement fuse blows soon then I'll know I have a bigger problem. I don't blare my music or listen to much wubwubstep so hopefully it won't

aegisdrgn 12-06-2015 11:04 PM

Good job on diagnosing the issue on your own!

Better version that really is all about that bass:

I got the same issue when i got my brz. I drove home and and noticed that there was no sound on the door speakers, went back to the dealer and they fixed it the next day... And it was the amp fuse too.

That could be it, in lieu of a better explanation.
I blew an internal fuse in an amp once by simply plugging in a MD player (yeah, long time ago...) A loud crack followed by utter silence.
I've since adapted the practice of turning everything off before connecting stuff up.

Perhaps the previous owner did some mods to the stereo and blew it?

The stock stereo sounds so bad at high levels, I can't see how anyone would ever turn it up high enough to blow a fuse.

I have abosolutely hated this radio since day one. The only thing I like about it is that is connects via bluetooth. Thats about it. I hate the sound quality of it. I hate the controls. I hate the radio signal and really dislike the "HD" setting for the radio and basically will just cause way more static and other crap. Ipod connectivity is alright but when I try to charge my phone with it, it's god awful. It will not charge my phone at all. Really dissapointed with the radio for this car and I will be making a custom setup including headunit and speakers. Not to mention the door rattles when "bass" hits and makes it sound like you have a blown bass speaker.

Car drives AMAZING tho

I'm not an audiophile so the sound quality doesn't bother me much, but the controls are so terrible and slow that I just use an Aux cable for my iPod instead of the USB connection. Otherwise by the time I find the album or playlist I want to play I would've already made it to my destination haha.

I don't have any issues with my door rattling yet. Haven't done any long highway drives though so maybe when I have to crank the volume up some it will pop up

humdizzle 12-08-2015 02:37 AM

Don't use the bluetooth if you are planning to jam out. The sound quality is alot better via usb. And use a high quality audio source.

The major rattles come from the window switches on both doors. Jam some electrical tape or a quarter between the door and the switch to get rid of the rattle. There will still be some rattle in the doors at certain frequencies.. but its loud enough for me.

i have a 2014, not sure if the 2013 had different speakers.

RichardsFRS 12-11-2015 01:38 PM

What kind of stereo do they put in the scoobies? My FRS has a Pioneer. Sounds pretty good to me. Its an HD stereo with bt. Does FRS have amps in the trunk? Hmmm I never really looked in it lol, I've only had it a week.

I'm 6-1 and I was concerned about the space myself. I have a lot of space to stretch out in the FRS

Seems so common, never saw this on mine though. I swapped woofers and a better amp as well.

What the 14s have that the 13s didn't is the pads around the speakers. That extra deadening makes a huge difference.

No amp or sub, in my car at least in the spare tire area when you lift the floor of the trunk there's an electronic box in the upper left hand corner that may be some sort of amp?

That is the amplifier for the door speakers.

In case you guys haven't tried... Do this to your BRZ Audio... makes a world of a difference and takes 2 minutes, no mod necessary...
