Tinting the 86

Hey guys,

Went to see my favourite tint guy today for tinting and struck a snag.

He couldnt get behind the third brake light on the window. ive read around about how to get behind it. Obviously the guy i use wants to do a good job so he doesnt want to just shove the tint in, nor does he want to cut around it (yuk)

Anyone had theirs tinted yet ? or better still has anyone tried removing the light ? the ones ive read involve removing the whole parcel shelf etc.

Thanks in advance

Mine's going to be factory tinted for free out of the dealership
Most legal dark tint

Why do you need to go to someone else?

Um, factory tint? Where the hell are these sales guys getting their information? Every dealer in Australia uses a third party to apply a film once the car has arrived. There is no factory tint option. A factory tint is tinted glass.

We've had our demos done and the guy did have an issue with the brake light but did manage to get both cars done in a couple of hours. The biggest consideration at the end of the day is the windows dropping to open and close the doors. They seem to settle over the space of a week or so though.

Sam, do you know how they ended up getting it done?

thanks

Blood, sweat and tears. It wasn't a fun experience. For results I'd recommend removing the brake light for better access.

Note - I haven't removed one yet so can't comment on the removal process.

Matthung 06-26-2012 01:47 AM

Maj3sty: i know a guy who has done all my tint and he is really good ....he doesnt want to damage my car so he had the car this morning and told me he cant do it.

M0nty: the dealer i bought from i rang them and spoke to the pre deivery manager and he personally does the tints (dunno if its true or not) and they do the tints on site.....so i am considering asking them to do it.

Must be a quiet dealership if the PD manager does them himself. Just get the tint done by a reputable local window tinter. It'll save you about $300.

Start with your local Solartint dealer.

Matthung 06-26-2012 01:52 AM

m0nty: the dealer uses solartint and asking price is $395, what do you think ?

He said its Galaxy film

m0nty 06-26-2012 01:54 AM

Call Solartint direct and ask them for a quote. ;)

Matthung 06-26-2012 01:56 AM

hey monty....i think the solartint you refer to is in NSW....unfortunatley i am in Vic.

Hopefully Rob figures out a way in due time, there's no way of detatching it?

FT86_Zero 06-26-2012 02:22 AM

anyone can recommend a good tint person/dealer? thanks

Matthung 06-26-2012 02:26 AM

Hey Nambo,

Thats why i am asking here ......he said they are a pain to do and if it involves removing the parcel shelf he wont be doing them.

I don't have a car in front of me but I would assume it should be two screws holding it in from underneath the parcel shelf. Should be relatively easy access.

I've heard good things about Tint Wizard from a work mate - not sure about their price for the 86 though - give em a call and let us know

os86 06-26-2012 02:41 AM

I do know a guy in Melbourne who does fantastic work and he comes to your place.

I will be happy to negotiate a price for the folks in Melbourne .

Expect around $250 for decent tint. If anyone is interested please let me know.

Heres a link to one in the states......looks like a pull apart job

Maj3sty 06-26-2012 03:32 AM

Sorry to clarify
My dealership is tinting my car for no additional cost
I thought this would be a standard Toyota dealership thing, or maybe I just got lucky

Then again I did buy from Peter Warren :)

Hey Nam, I'll ask Tommy what price they can get us tint. Or if you ask 1st let me know.

FT-86GOD 06-26-2012 03:53 AM

I want that 3rd brake light removed completely... I know now its illegal to not have fitted when on the rd but it does take up a lot of vision through the back window... I dont think cops would notice either...

I imagine they would notice. However it would be pretty simple to build a less obtrusive one. LED's are cheap these days. Hmm I shouldn't give away good business idea's.

Very true... Led is an option

ChocolateNick 06-26-2012 04:10 AM

Too late millions of people beat me to it on ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/48-Red-LE...ht_5192wt_1270

Victorian rules on the topic. SHould be the same australia wide. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...7D/0/VSI13.pdf
Basically it does appear legal to replace it. Might be worth considering to improve visibility and make window tinting easier.

Matthung 06-28-2012 11:30 AM

i confirmed today with the guys at Toyota, the only way to tint the rear window properly is to remove the parcel shelf completely.

Not the only way. A good tinter can get in there without removing it.

I managed to get free tinting for my 86, now I wonder if the dealer would only do the side windows, or would they do the rear too?

The only time I've seen a dealer leave the rear screen was on a metal roof cabriolet without roof luck. I'm sure it'll be done but there's no harm in double checking.

DriftEightSix 06-29-2012 07:05 PM

In need of a Brisbane tinter anyone k.ow a decent one?

What tint have people used so far. I want to get "darkest legal tint" but there are so many options, what can you recommended

Nardi330 06-30-2012 05:03 AM

i am using a mobile guy who has been tinting my + friends cars and my home.

Xauterus 06-30-2012 05:36 AM

Do you want to let us know who?

newft86 06-30-2012 10:04 PM

Guys, when i give a customer Darkest Legal Window Tint as part of a deal it is not the BS "Factory Tint" or laminated glass, it's aftermarket window tint with a lifetime warranty darkened to legal limits.

Hope that clarifies it for you a bit.
