Vandalism?

I'm noticing a lot of people messing with my car while parked. In two weeks there have been more problems than during 15 years of car ownership. Anyone else having problems?

excited86 06-25-2012 10:01 PM

what kind of parking lot is this? paid and monitored or just a random park lot.

cgrey 06-25-2012 10:04 PM

Street parking, no other option. NYC.

Rossman 06-25-2012 10:05 PM

Ugh, sorry to hear. Haven't got mine yet but hope nothing like that happens :(

What are they doing?

Consider debadging it, then maybe people won't know what it is...:iono:

So far extinguishing cigarettes on it then tossing the butts in the wiper area, stickers on the windows, pouring things on it. Nothing like a boot in the door yet but I'm sure it's coming. Or a brick in the window.

Unusual for this area and specifically only this car. Started immediately too, first night I parked it here.

Guess the car stands out.

Rossman 06-25-2012 10:16 PM

Sounds like someone is jealous of your success :(

You live in America - Stakeout your car with a Colt .45!

rice_classic 06-25-2012 10:17 PM

Note to self, stay out of NYC.

I wonder if similar events will take place when I park on the streets of Seattle.

Rossman 06-25-2012 10:20 PM

Where's that South African flamethrower car defense system when you need it?

Khyron686 06-25-2012 10:20 PM

It looks more expensive than it is. Once people figure that out it won't be so bad (or good depending where you are). I came out today to see a Mustang GT parked beside mine and it looked almost shabby (and I like Mustangs).

This! I would take some time and keep an eye on it. It seems to me like a specific person is messing with you, or just doesn't like you for some reason.

PoRco 06-25-2012 10:23 PM

Man that sucks ballz...

I suggest getting one of those dash cams. They aren't TOO expensive, considering the love you have for the car... it'll be worth it.

There's a car in my neighbourhood that has a blue light constantly blinking at his dash. It looks like a camera..and I constantly feel like I'm being watched when I pass by that car. It got me thinking...and I'm gonna get something like that for my car (when I get it) . Because the least it will do is make people think twice before doing stupid shit...

Ordering one right now. Handy for all kinds of things and been putting it off too long.

Yeah, the car does look a lot more expensive than it is. I've parked more expensive brand new cars here and never a problem until now.

If they become more common I hope the problem disappears.

I don't think it does. At least in the day time.
There have been a few times where I've been standing at the 4th and University bus station, and spotted Tesla Roaster or a Audi R8 parked across the street. Quite a few people take pictures, and a few people put their hands on the windows to look at the interior, but nothing nasty.

i saw seattle made top 10 city for most car thefts. i was always under the impression Washington state was a pretty laid back place.

Seriously, if it is happening this often, stake out your car for a night, or at least borrow a camera and train it on your car one evening. You might just get lucky and catch them in the act.

My guess is that it is the same person doing this, and they most likely drive a Z or a Hyundai based on the number of trolls we get from those brands...:paddle:

Yeah, they probably drive a Z and think that his FRS is lame because it doesn't have chrome wheels, a spoiler, or a drop top. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...lies/amuse.gif

Sigh-on-Rice 06-25-2012 10:47 PM

Sorry to hear that. Must be hard owning a car in NYC.

Yeah but they're all S2k seats and Integras. :mad0260: Seriously the Honda scene here is/was out of hand. The "tuner" scene theft rate is off the charts!

Actually WA is pretty laid back but theft rate has to do with the laws. You have to caught stealing cars several times before you see jail time. It's the 7 strikes and you're out system.

My old roommate had his car stolen from our driveway twice. The 1st time was a quick recovery and they took almost nothing off the car besides the wheels! The 2nd time was a botched attempt (they rolled it down the neighborhood before trying to hotwire it at 9pm when we were all home... brave Effers that's for sure). This was a 1989 Civic Hatchback with a stock engine. It was just lowered with aftermarket wheels but theives "thought" it had a B18 in it.

Basically own a car that doesn't have an engine, wheels or seats that conveniently fit in/on other vehicles and you're good to go.

edit: WA State changed their laws in 2007 regarding auto theft because of how bad it was/is. I need to go back and re-read those laws. In 2003 (when I had roommate) the police looked at like this... "No violent crime, no care. If the crime involved insurable items and nobody was attacked and no drugs or guns were involved... well good luck buddy."

I guess its better than being mugged at gunpoint. Hopefully my car will be safe when i decide to go up there next year.

mattles 06-25-2012 11:12 PM

Mines been keyed down to the color, other than that not really fucked with. Luckily (?) it was keyed on the front bumper so no metal repair, just plastic. Just picked up the paint pen from the local subaru dealership, gonna see what I can do this weekend. If I fail, I guess its off to paint/body specialist.

This is why I have a camera security system. I caught the bastard that for years kept making my light up Christmas dear hump each other. :)

Pscylo 06-25-2012 11:59 PM

Biometrics incoming on mine.

Mazdaspeed 06-25-2012 11:59 PM

Dang, are you guys doing anything to draw unnecessary attention to the car (parking across lanes, parking way far away from everyone else, etc.) or does it seem like people are vandalizing these things just for kicks?

I've had my fire engine red Mazdaspeed 3 for around 5 years and it doesn't have so much as a single door ding, nor has it been keyed or intentionally damaged in any way. And my car even draws a bit of ire from people who think it's just a badge job without any actual performance to back it up.

I feel for the OP. Someone put a nice fist sized dent in mine. Feels bad man.

bestwheelbase 06-26-2012 01:05 AM

It is heart-breaking to hear that people are messing with your cars. :(

Lytheum 06-26-2012 01:12 AM

I dont work in the best neighborhood so I make sure to park where its on a security camera. I didnt think about drawing unwanted attention until i got the car. This thing really stands out.

Y2A 06-26-2012 01:20 AM

Are you parked in manhattan or one of the outer Burroughs? I live in queens and having second thoughts of getting the car until I find a place with a garage:sigh:

waylonrobert 06-26-2012 01:21 AM

Man that sucks! I hope it stops. Stories like this make me happy I have a garage.

Which one are you ordering? I should start looking at options too

Skyhound 06-26-2012 02:42 AM

My sister owned my old Jag X-Type before me. She lives in Rego Park, Queens which isn't the worst place in queens. Within a week of owning it, her leaper hood mascot was stolen. I'm not particularly surprised because those hood ornaments are pretty expensive and a good way to score some quick cash.

Though it sounds like someone is actively trying to mess with you. Do you always park in the same general area? Do you live in an apartment building and if so, could you have possibly pissed off one of your neighbors?

Sure you could try putting a camera in the car and it could stop the problem. Though it can also make it worse if a guy just doesn't car and you could just piss him off more if you try to bring the authorities into it since they probably won't do anything. You're probably better off just finding a new place to park. If it continues after that, then there is clearly something personal going on.

After much research, this one seems good:

Seems perfect. Always on, sensitive seismic and motion, high quality, loop recording.

Street parking in Manhattan is where I'm having the problem. I've never had a problem parking anywhere in Queens so I wouldn't worry about parking there. What area?
