Perrin Crank Pulley now available

Have any of the tuners swapped out this part yet? Do we need to cut the belt and replace it?

markmatley 06-25-2012 07:29 PM

First question, will it not ruin my warranty with Toyota/Subaru? It seems like there is no need to cut anything or replace anything bu the crank pulley. Check out Jeffs blog on your provided link for pictures of the pulley installed.

Silverdub 06-25-2012 08:35 PM

Ismt the pem part a harmonic dampener though?

If I do the math in reverse (weight:power ratio) they'd have to be adding a little over 7hp for that claim to be true.

FRS stock weight:power = 2758/200 = 13.79
Minus 100 lbs = 2658/200 = 13.29
stock weight and 207 hp = 2758/207 = 13.32

Am I missing something?

I think that would be correct. I wonder how much more weight could be saved by reducing the weight of the other pulleys?

Just remember removing rotating mass won't make much difference on a dyno just like removing your passenger seat won't make any difference different on a dyno. It will however rob less power especially in the first gear or two.

serialk11r 06-25-2012 10:09 PM

That's probably first gear. As the gears go higher, the engine's proportion of rotational inertia as a part of the total rotational inertia of the drivetrain decreases.

We have done this a couple times recently with mixed results. We have NOT done this on the BRZ yet. We have only been doing long term testing making sure there are no negative effects. Which there isn't. The next time we are on the dyno, this part will be installed and tested back to back. It may not show anything, but for sure you can feel this on the road.

This is partially why it this part is so popular on the WRX/STI engines. Its noticeable, inexpensive, and a piece of cake to install (on a manual).

So thats the same for a under drive pulley kit aswell? Lets say a company claims 8 hp, are they usually claiming that from 1st gear?

ichitaka05 06-25-2012 11:13 PM

Hey Jeff,

Are these lightweight pulley go well w lightweight flywheel?

I know that lightweight pulley & flywheel doesn't go well together

Perrin said in the thread where they posted a million pictures of components in the car that it's not underdrive, it's same as stock diameter. So no, you're not actually gaining power, but you are reducing the rotational inertia of the engine.

As for advertising, I'd guess that most companies would advertise 1st gear since that's where it makes the biggest difference.

They should go very well with them. Sometimes both can cause misfire codes, but not actual misfires. We don't know if this will happen yet as there isn't too many of these out on cars. If you have a lightened flywheel, please hit us up! I would love to get this on your car for some testing.

To give you an idea. Only some EJ20 motors had issues with misfire CEL's from both being installed. Other than that, the 2.5L engines almost NEVER have this problem. I have had about 4 of these with some kind of light weight flywheel and pulley with ZERO misfires, and ZERO problems.

Yup not under drive at all. In the past, we would find situations where this messed up other things like PS, and battery voltage. So we have NEVER made our crank pulleys underdriven for this matter.

On this new engine, there is no PS pump, but now its driving the water pump. There is no way, I would want to slow this down!

Thanks! Currently looking at the all the options of mods. I don't wanna jump the gun... yet lol

I just remembered my friend's GM8 (coupe Impreza w swapped JDM wrx engine) & when he installed both lightweight pulley & flywheel, it gave him misfire, so that's why I asked.

To clarify I did understand this was not a under drive pulley. I was just comparing under dive kits to lighter weight pulleys if the hp gains were greater in 1st gears than say 4th for a under drive kit( crank/alternator or whatever).

Ah, well accessory power should just be engine speed dependent (well, I guess it depends on how much electrical power you're using too), so underdrive pulleys should be getting gains in all gears.

Bonburner 06-26-2012 02:31 AM

I won't jump the gun but please keep up the work!
I'm more paranoid about keeping the full warranty in case of anything goes odd with the entirely new platform ~
I'd expect this to be good for both First AND Second gears ~

I bet he used an early ECU (02-04) where the misfire detection parameters are way too sensitive. If this does become a problem, ECU tuning will take care of the sensitivity and gone will be those concerns.

Warranty on a new car is important. Always keep in mind that the dealer HAS to prove the aftermarket part caused the problem. Also keep in mind that a crank pulley can't void your whole cars warranty. Same goes for exhaust systems, and all those kinds of parts. Worst case scenario they can only void the warranty of the parts they effect. This is why catbacks and most exhaust components do not effect warranty at all.

Damn! You're dead on! I'm not sure what he do to solve the problem, but he doesn't have any problem anymore.

Anyways on-topic :D Please keep us updated on awesome parts you guys are making!

Who sells perrin parts in the province of quebec? Ups charges an arm and a leg in duties when shipping over the border unless the shipper tags it as a gift

I had it on my WRX and it was noticeable. That's why I want it on my BRZ. However, I need to know if I should get another belt or if the original one can be removed in tact. :)

PERRIN_Jeff 06-26-2012 03:11 PM

Original belt is used. Remember how easy it was on your WRX? Cut that in half, that is how much easier it is on this car. The new belt tensioner is sooooo easy to deal with!

milenko11 06-26-2012 03:16 PM

my '11 did not have the tensioner. I didn't notice the BRZ did! Good news. I'll be ordering a pulley shortly!

Silverdub 06-26-2012 03:31 PM

I just called perry auto and ordered the part!

xcelir8brz 06-26-2012 04:33 PM

Perrin - I ordered one as well and it's on it's way. I have a 6AT. Mind posting the instructions here?

Philly 06-26-2012 10:14 PM

Hi Perrin,

I live in Toronto and saw "Nextmod" as the local dealer. Do you know how reputable this place is and if they can do a good job installing the pulley?

Would this work on my automatic?

Any other dealers I could order from?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

I will get right on that tomorrow. Normally there is a PDF download for that on our site, but we will have to fix that.

We have lots of dealers around. They most likely ordered them this week, then takes a week to get it,then a few days to deal with it. So it could be a couple weeks away before they get them. If Nextmod has a 22mm socket, breaker bar, pry bar and arms, they can install this. Its that easy.

Manual tranny cars have no problems. Put it in 6th gear, take the bolt off and in about 10minutes its installed. For auto customers, its a little trickier. You will need to lock down the flex plate. This is very easy using a pry bar in the port on the engine located on the top behind the intake manifold. This may take two people, but its makes it very simple on the FA and FB engines.

mike2100 06-27-2012 06:10 AM

What's the recommended torque for that bolt? Loc-tite required?

Also, Kronos mentioned that the FR-S stock pulley is 1 lb heavier than the BRZ. Is that true?

PERRIN_Jeff 06-27-2012 11:11 AM

The TQ spec is ft-lbs and then an angle. So you tighten it to 14.8ft-lbs, then 90 degrees more beyond that. It ends up about 90ft-lbs.

Regarding the FR-S pulley being heavier. We have both cars sitting next to each other and looking over both of them, they look exactly the same. The OD, the ID, the thickness and pretty much everything I could measure appears to be the same. I didn't remove the FR-S part, but I would be surprised if it was different.

milenko11 06-27-2012 12:08 PM

What size is the bolt?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2

PERRIN_Jeff 06-27-2012 01:14 PM

Its just like an EJ engine bolt. I think M16, but about 4" long. I can get the exact info if necessary. If is regarding TQ spec, I hate to say, but we always TQ them to "Tight" or 100ft-lbs and never have problems.

:)

ATL BRZ 07-03-2012 02:35 PM

Anyone install one of these on their car yet? I want to know if you could tell a difference. I don't have my BRZ yet, but I may go ahead and buy a pulley while they're on sale! I'd like to think that this would help offset drivetrain loss via the increase in rotational mass by putting on 18x8" wheels and tires that may be a little heavier than stock.

xcelir8brz 07-03-2012 03:18 PM

In process (literally) of doing my BRZ 6AT. I'll advise accordingly with Pix. Use the Company23 Subaru tool. Should make the job a snap for anyone!

Cool, can't wait for your pics of the install! Please also get a pic of the special tool! Is the tool expensive like other factory special tools??

EDIT: Is the tool even necessary for the pulley install on a 6MT?

StarsGarrador 07-03-2012 04:59 PM

I just left my dealership asking a few questions.. Apparently anything besides cosmetics, will void my warranty with Subaru. When I said I thought they have to prove with out a doubt any aftermarket part was the cause they said all Subaru has to do it prove you had that part on. :/ oh well, my Perrin pulley and HKS exhaust are still going on -.-

xcelir8brz 07-03-2012 05:10 PM

Installed. Company23 tool helped greatly. $50 shipped directly from web site. Took a little more than 30 minutes on the 6AT because I took pictures. Was 'VERY' easy in my opinion.

Top notch quality Perrin!
