Misfire after installing Crawford Billet Power Blocks (BPB)

So today I installed the Crawford Billet Power Blocks. I took the car for a drive after I installed them, and everything seemed normal until I revved it to about 4k under load, and it seemed to stutter and not want to go above that. I took it home and tightened up the intake tube and looked over everything and it all seemed fine, so I took it out again and under a bit more throttle revved it to 4k. Same issue, but this time I got a blinking CEL that went away after a few seconds. I checked the code with my OBD reader and it's a cylinder 2 misfire. Any idea of the quickest way to fix this or find the problem? My guess is the o-ring on that cylinder has come undone and is causing a vacuum leak. Thanks in advance

By the way - my only other mod on the engine is the Perrin CAI and inlet tube. No tune.

humfrz 11-20-2015 12:30 AM

I reckon the only way to check to see if the "O" ring slipped out of the groove during installation, is to take it off and check.

Now, wasn't THAT helpful .....:(

I just took them out and the misfires stopped. No blocks for me. Rallysportdirect won't even let me return them!

@LaertesSon did you determine whether the o-ring was out of place, etc.? Or did you just take them off, no more problem, so it's the parts fault?

Otherwise why would @Rallysportdirect even let you return an installed part that was not proven to be defective?

Misfire after installing Crawford Billet Power Blocks (BPB)

The o-rings were just fine. It's as simple as blocks in = misfires blocks out = runs fine. I looked and the blocks seem to have a bit of a defect, a really small dent:
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11...4b68e5cac8.jpg
I do not think I changed one thing other than the blocks, and my misfire was solved. I'm not sure if such a small dent could actually cause a vacuum problem, but it's the only solution I can come up with.

EDIT: I don't really expect RSD to let me return them. It's just a pain because from what I can tell, the blocks were causing the issue.

@LaertesSon interesting find. I too am curious to find out if that dent could be causing your issues. Hopefully RSD and/or Crawford can shed some light on this issue.

I am as well. I will update on what Crawford says. I think I'm out of luck with RSD. Everyone be careful with these blocks and ensure they aren't damaged before you install them.

Crawford should replace it under warranty. if not, who'll buy it? sucks to happen this to OP. It's annoying to replace same part like 2-3 times

I'm wouldnt attempt to sell them because I spent quite a few hours getting them in and out and have nothing to show for it and I wouldnt wish that on anyone lol. Just awaiting Crawfords response now

humfrz 11-20-2015 03:59 PM

I wouldn't think that little nick would be an issue, because the O ring should seal around it.

Did you check the blocks to make sure they were "flat", like in ..... not warped .... ??

That's good thinking.
I just checked with a level and the level sits perfectly flat along both of the blocks. They look to be flat.

humfrz 11-20-2015 04:52 PM

hmmmm.........I hope this doesn't insult your mechanical abilities ....... but, are you sure you installed the power blocks ....... gasket side down ..... ??

Hah not at all. Fair question. I made sure to do that when I installed them. I triple checked that as I was installing.

humfrz 11-20-2015 06:05 PM

Well, I'm out of "ideas".......:(

Hopefully, Crawford has a solution.

What a bummer ...... all that work ......

Please let us know how it turns out.

I will report everything I get back for you guys to read.

go_a_way1 11-20-2015 07:15 PM

Maybe you pulled a wire slightly out cuz I hear they are a tight fit??

PunX 11-23-2015 10:50 AM

Just my two cents, but as those blocks change the amount of air that engine can access instantly - before opening throttle. did you by any chance disconnected battery to have ECU relearn all the fuel trims and ratios? as fueling has changed, i think it should be reinitiated like that. it may help.

PunX 11-27-2015 04:49 AM

Any feedback from crawford already?
hopefully this thread isn't forgotten.

What did you hear from crawford?

LaertesSon 01-21-2016 04:28 PM

I got absolutely nothing from Crawford. They never answered any of my emails or calls. I can't say I recommend dealing with them.

nikitopo 01-21-2016 04:31 PM

Too bad ..

So that totally turns me off of buying the crawford BPBs, would money be better spent on pulleys and a front pipe then?

NyC Zn6 01-21-2016 04:59 PM

Crawford Performance is a joke...need some answers as well.

LaertesSon 01-21-2016 05:05 PM

Yeah man go for something other than their product. They may be good engineers (I can't speak for if the product works in all cases) but they do not know how to run any sort of customer service. Just make sure to always check the return policies and you'll be fine.

LaertesSon 01-21-2016 05:09 PM

But don't make this about the product, seriously. I'm sure it works great in most cases. It just didn't for me, and I got no sort of support from them when that happened.

D_Thissen 01-21-2016 05:09 PM

Sorry to hear..
I would post this on their FB page. If they don't have the decency to return your calls or emails, screw 'em.

Yea, I believe they got kicked off the vendors/sponsor list here because of there service and claims at some point. Also the dyno numbers for the block seem quite embellished, I was so sure of buying this but now I'm just gonna swing on some cnt uel headers, grimmspeed gaskets and a perrin pulley for the same money as the block and proven gains.

Even more important note they never say that the power is returned to the location of the torque dip or say that you'll lose power on the top end. I think there's a ROM tutorial available that keeps you from losing all that power up top

Thats a much better move. I would go back and do the same if I could.

drewbot 01-21-2016 05:45 PM

*going to check my blocks now*

So you're stuck with blocks that don't work and are essentially paper weights right now?

That's right. But they are some nice paperweights :p

D_Thissen 01-21-2016 06:41 PM

I remember Quirt was arguing on a fb with a few forum members. I can't remember what it was about now though.

Damn, that sucks, I feel really bad for you, I think it's too late to pester them, also you could have tried paypal dispute or CC dispute because it arrived damaged.

I was thinking about putting in a dispute. I just don't even know where to start with that. I may just sell them on eBay as "damaged goods" for a loss.

Did eventually get a response from Crawford, guys. They said they'd install for free in California (no help since I'm in Atlanta) but I did appreciate the response. They do have decent customer service. Just not much help for me. I'm going to sell them for a loss and move on to OFH3/OFT combo. Just seems like a better bet to me:D

And thanks everyone for your help throughout this!

Good idea, that's your best bet, the newest OFH specific tunes make around 20-30 whp now and get rid of the torque dip better that those Crawford blocks anyway

Good choice switching to the works AB-M as well, the invidia N1 would probably turn into a drone fest lol

I'm going to give it a shot before switching to the AB-M but I am 100% sure it will drone unbearably:lol:
