STI GEAR SHIFT LEVER (ST35010AS000) unpacking

Hi guys, here there are some pics about STI shift lever as JDM name it, shortly SS for all us.

After one year of Kartboy usage I decide to remove it and install this one.
With Kartboy I had a lot of trouble referring to "rattle" and sometimes it was very very precise as of engagement (too much).

STI is more "technical" as build, more teflon as you can see. No rattle @at any rpm range and gear.

Reducement of engagement (STI) is a bit lower than Kartboy. Very satisfied.

If you wish to buy, remember that TRD SS is the same HW of STI one and Subaru is a bit cheaper!

Could you clarify what you mean by this?

What he means is that this STI short shifter is pretty much identical to the JDM TRD Short Shifter but cheaper.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification friend.

Mr.ac 11-17-2015 10:44 PM

This is different than the TRD quick shifter right?
Also about how much did this run you?

As technic is quite different thus TRD quick modifies the lever near sub-pillow. I don't know the exact ratio reduction in comparison to SS but remember that quick shift is a develop of Toyota US, not JDM.
Might be quite different for market requirements and usage.

Installed by myself as I done with Kartboy. Yes, I have both MTEC shifter springs.
Easy install but remember, reduction ratio is not so wide as kartboy...but it is still operating after 1k kms with no trouble and no rattle at any rpm range. Gear engagement is more easy and soft.

Yeah the TRD is good enough for government work!

XtremeMaC 12-10-2015 01:31 AM

I'm not happy with my shifter and transmission. hoping it'd help fix this and obviously to shorten the throw I got the TWM Performance shortshifter. had one for my Mazda 3, loved it so much!
With the frs, major thing that still bugs me is the shifting especially 1 to 2, 2 to 1....
even though I installed the thickest washer I could find I still do have some looseness.

I wonder how the JDM compares to TWM...

There are two official branches of TRD, TRD USA and TRD Japan. The TRD Japan short shifter is just like this STI one. The US TRD modifies the lower connection.

How is your new shifter now that you've had it another month?

Amazing. No rattle at any rpm. I am finally very satisfied.

Glad to hear that and thanx for the quick reply:thanks:

@Trap63 would I have to jack up the car and replace anything from under the body to install the STI shifter? (Noticed Kartboy shifter requires replacing a spring and shifter bushing from under the floorpan.)

Those are optional for better shifting feel.

I replaced last year the 2 springs and back bush and mount bush by bodyshop, STI SS can be installed w/o jack up the car, same as Kboy you see in DIY dir.

I hate to ask the noob question but here I go.

If i buy this https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/42170, is it as simple as taking old shifter out and installing new one, or do I need new springs? I'd get my mechanic to do it.

When it comes to shifters, I don't have much knowledge in the area.

Appreciate the help!

Edit: I want to add that I live in Australia. I've been looking at where to purchase some mtec Springs but have had no luck. Best place I can find is their site.

You dont need new springs. I recommend getting the STi transmission mount kit as well. Shifting is rock solid with mounts - that 2nd gear harshness is all but gone. The occurrence and harshness both reduced.

It seems they ship to your country.

As for the transmission mount, I suggest to get whiteline insert instead of new mounting. Much easier to install and cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking into transmission mounts. I can get the Perrin rear shifter bushing relatively cheap.

Would I need to get a new reverse lockout or can i just utilize the current one?

The STI shifter comes with a new plastic reverse lockout already installed.

The STI transmission mount feels better than the Whiteline bushing.

The Perrin rear shifter bushing is ok.

I'm seeing if I can run both the TRD Quick Shift kit and the STI Gear Lever (short shifter). They are completely different parts. I'm thinking I may have compatibility issues with my aluminum driveshaft and the TRD kit though.

Is this the STI transmission mount everyone is referring to?

That one is not. That's for the Forester; the FR-S and BRZ transmission mount is very similar, but it is different. I have a picture of it in my build thread from when I did the install after switching from the Whiteline positive shift kit bushing.

This is the droid you are looking for:

@Trap63 do you have pictures of how the shift boot is different then OEM? Japanparts have a note saying that it's different so it'll be included, but I already have one from JPM that I'd like to keep. Thanks!

I loose this description of Japanparts. I confirm you that Alcantara JPM will fit as you see.

Any news on the TRD quick shift kit retrofitting on to the STi SS?

I tried once, it did not work where the adapter bolts up. The other pieces worked though. I haven't given up yet and will try it again soon though, the first time around it was late and I was in a rush to finish.
